gerrin Sunderland are reportedly closing in on the signing of Argentine striker Ignacio Scocco. Sunderland boss Gus Poyet confirmed earlier this week he was interested in Internacional ace Scocco and reports emanating from South America claim that he is on the verge of a move to Wearside. The likes of River Plate, Newell's Old Boys and Valencia have been credited with an interest in Scocco, but it appears Sunderland are in pole position to land the Argentine international. The Black Cats have held a long-term interest in the 28-year-old and the player's father, Hector, has claimed the most likely destination for his son is the Stadium of Light "The most likely today is that [Scocco] joins Sunderland," Scocco Snr told Diario Ole. "River and Newell's asked for him but Internacional's demands are too high and they don't want to loan him out. "That's understandable as they want to recoup the investment they made and no club in Argentina can afford what they want." Scocco Snr also revealed that Poyet had spoken with his son about a move to the Premier League. "Poyet told him what he wants that he is very interested that Scocco goes [to Sunderland.]," added Scocco Snr. Internacional's director of football Roberto Melo has confirmed Scocco wants to leave the club and that several sides are chasing his signature although he ruled out any loan switch for the forward. "There are many clubs interested in Scocco and there are several offers, but we want a permanent move, we are not interested in loan offers," Melo told Radio Bandeirantes.

The arrival of Uruguayan striker Juan Manuel Olivera to Estudiantes de La Plata is close to materialize and definitions for the next 48 hours are expected Paves the way for scocco the defender will be presented tomorrow at Sunderland in England. on virginili http://deportes.terra.com.ar/futbol...71645bfb2ec83410VgnCLD2000000dc6eb0aRCRD.html
Santiago Vergini is expected on Wearside today to sign for Sunderland. Reports in Argentina suggests agreement has been reached with Estudiantes, and the centre-back will be on Wearside today, 24 hours later than the Black Cats had planned. Sunderland are thought to have agreed an initial loan for the 25-year-old, and a four-year contract if the arrangement becomes permanent at the end of the season. Even though optimism is growing on Wearside after one defeat in nine matches, making permanent signings before the club’s Premier League status for next season has been confirmed is risky, so Sunderland have guarded against it. The initial loan fee is thought to be £500,000, with half as much again due in June to keep the player. Like Marcos Alonso, who has joined on loan from Fiorentina, Vergini’s signing has the fingerprints of coach Gustavo Poyet, rather than director of football Roberto de Fanti, all over it. De Fanti was largely responsible for the influx of 14 new players last summer, many of whom are yet to make any real impact. Argentina international Vergini is a central defender, the position where Sunderland are arguably better served than any other. But beneath the first-choice pairing of former Manchester United players John O’Shea and Wes Brown, there is little by way of cover, with Valentin Roberge and Modibo Diakite yet to convince in the Premier League. Brown has a wretched career injury record, and quality cover is therefore needed. Poyet went to the lengths of fielding midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng and right-back Phil Bardsley at centre-back against Carlisle United in the FA Cup, for a game O’Shea and Brown missed through injury and suspension respectively. The prospects of Vergini getting a game are helped by the fact he can play at right-back. He made 14 appearances there for Newells Old Boys in 2012, before establishing himself in the centre of defence. Poyet said of the 6ft 3in defender, whom he first watched as manager of Brighton and Hove Albion: “The way he plays, understands football and his physical size made me think of him as a potential signing.” The Uruguayan had hoped to bring Vergini to the south coast last summer, only to lose his job there in controversial circumstances. Vergini is one of three Argentinians Sunderland hope to sign this month, with Internacional attacker Ignacio Scocco and goalkeeper Mariano Andujar. Meanwhile, Sunderland sources claim Swansea City chairman Hugh Jenkins is mistaken in claiming Ki can be recalled from his season-long loan at any point until the end of this month. Jenkins has disputed Poyet’s claim that the cut-off point for the South Korean to return to south Wales was last week. The Swans currently have nine players injured, as many as any side in the Premier League, but manager Michael Laudrup has anyway been quoted as saying that a recall would not be in anyone’s interests. Ki (pictured below) has been the best of de Fanti’s summer signings and Poyet said last week he was looking to make the arrangement permanent this week. Ki’s response to scoring at Fulham on Saturday suggested he was keen on the idea too. The Black Cats’ League Cup semi-final second leg against Manchester United will be televised live at the Stadium of Light after the club sold out their entire allocation of 9,000 tickets for the game. Sunderland lead 2-1 from the first leg, and avoiding defeat at Old Trafford a week today would see them reach a Wembley final for the first time since the 1992 FA Cup final.
Cheers RTB, quite a few headers there as well. Can see him on the end of a few Alonso /Johnson crosses before the end of the season. Still looking for that quality creative midfielder?
GUS POYET says prospective signing Santiago Vergini’s determination to join Sunderland has been crucial towards progressing his transfer. The Sunderland head coach has confirmed that centre-half Vergini is close to finalising his switch to the Stadium of Light, with the defender thought to have flown to England from Argentina yesterday. Sunderland agreed a deal last week with Argentine club Estudiantes, but the move has rumbled on for several days and has been thrown into doubt over settling the 25-year-old’s contract with his current employers. But with Vergini now on the verge of becoming Sunderland’s second January arrival – a move which could see fellow centre-half Modibo Diakite leave the Stadium of Light after he was linked with a loan switch to Genoa yesterday – Poyet has praised the character of his potential new signing. Poyet told the Echo: “If it goes through, we have to give plenty of credit to the player because he wants this badly. “That gives you a big hope as a manager. “We’re getting closer. “It’s not been easy, we’ve been going forwards and backwards. One day it’s looked ‘yes’ and the next it’s looked ‘no’. “With such extremes, it’s been difficult. But now I’m hopeful.” http://www.sunderlandecho.com/sport...-sign-excites-sunderland-boss-poyet-1-6375978
I heard a reporter on the radio yesterday say "I don;t think he'll succeed at Sunderland. He doesn't have many goals to his name" - He's a centre half FFS!!
Gus Poyet looks set to seal the deal to bring Argentine defender, Santiago Vergini to Sunderland as it is understood that the 25-year old centre back has arrived on Wearside to finalise his transfer from Estudiantes. The belief is that this deal would initially be until the end of the season with a view to remain with the Poyet’s relegation threatened side. However, hopes of pairing Vergini with former Newell’s Old Boys team mate, Ignacio Scocco appear a long way off at this stage despite Poyet’s interest. Scocco has not enjoyed the best spell of his career since a move last summer to Internacional and is now linked with a move away. However, the Brazilian side are looking to recoup most of the $6.5 million they paid for the prolific front man. If the fee alone had not been a stumbling block, former club Newell’s remain hopeful that if Scocco is available a move back to Rosario is available. President, Guillermo Lorente told Radio La Red, ”Ignacio Scocco is very interested in returning to Newell’s and likewise, Newell’s are very interested in bringing him back.” What perhaps increases the strength of Newell’s hand is that ”Internacional didn’t pay one of the installments which were due to be paid by January 10. We’ll consider all possibilities to be able to bring him,” continued Lorente. According to the bookies, like 888sport, Sunderland are still among the favourites for the drop as they remain in the bottom 3 but there is no doubting these two would greatly improve the options available to Gus Poyet. Vergini was a key component of the Newell’s side that won the Torneo Final last year and at only 25 has a good future ahead of him. Comfortable on the ball and a strong leader along the back line, Vergini should have no problems adapting to english football. As Gus Poyet admitted in The Mirror ”With Vergini, we’re close,” adding, “I’ve talked to him and it’s well on the way. I’ve known him for years.” Sunderland’s main issue has been scoring goals and so Ignacio Scocco would be a great signing. His move to Brazil may not have worked out but whilst at Newell’s Scocco was the stand out player in the division and claimed the top scorer award two seasons running. Pacy and able to drift into wider areas and work the channels, Scocco could be just what a misfiring Sunderland side are looking for. http://golazoargentino.wordpress.co...ne-defender-but-may-miss-out-on-top-striker/?
I have a feeling this lad Scocco is a home boy and wouldn't make the transition to English football too well. We need immediate impact not next season investments. I'd sooner invest in Rhodes personally up front and have a lad capable of coming straight into proceedings.
