Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought it [the penalty] was soft if I am being honest. I would call that a Spanish penalty, it is one where the attacker goes into the defender - who does not get the ball - and the contact puts him over. "If we get that wee bit of fortune, we will take it." .. I've never heard that one before
Our 7 1/2 ran at their 3 3/4 in the box after blocking the 5 1/2's attempted clearance. Was maybe a bit of a French Handball but a blatant Spanish pen. A well converted pen by our 4 1/6th DM as well.
I don't get it. He kicks Sterling and gets none of the ball at all. How can it not be a penalty? Just how much are you allowed to kick a player in the box before it is a penalty?
Hes a top top top top 7 1/2 though. p.s. I love BR's lingo. Great combination of humour, random sound bits and deflecting attention from the players. He learnt from Mou obviously.
No he didn't. He threw his thigh across Sterling's path, bot nowhere near as violently as Eto'o did against Suarez. as said, I don't think Raheen 'dived' (not that I'd have had a problem if he did) but I wouldn't have been happy if that had been given against us.
It was a tiny push downwards on Sterling that sent him over, he didn't make any contact with his legs. Very, very soft.

I said at the time it's soft.. but he's attempted to make a tackle (he leg moves across Sterling) which in turns means they collide hips and because he didn't win any of the ball you're running the risk of it being a pen. Anywhere else on the pitch, that's a foul... but 90% of the time you don't see it given in the area. Luckily this 1 time it was given. As a defender, don't give the attacker any opportunity to go down... he did that and as I say, you then run the risk.
It certainly wasn't a dive. You might not think it was a pen, but contact was made and Sterling is only slight, add that onto a wet pitch (we saw both Sturridge and Butland slip in the area for our 5th) and it seems to me the contact put him off balance and he lost his footing which resulted in him going down.
Depends what angle you see it from. From the refs and from behind the goal it looks a pen and there was certainly more contact than I originally thought. Surprised it was given though but maybe because it WASNT Suarez that's why we got it.
A bitter Stoke bitch is on 606 now saying this penalty is referee corruption FFS his leg was swept more than Daniel in The Karate Kid
It looked soft but it was a penalty. From the angle (look at the post above), the contact is clear to see. If it hadn't been given, we would have complained about how it would have been a free kick had it happened outside the box. Nice to have a bit of luck today! If anything, the focus should be more on Sterling's hand ball which led to the penalty. And off topic, I hate Niall Quinn.
