Goram had Scottish parents... Mcgeady had Scottish parents Goram was born in england Mcgeady was born in Scotland Ergo, mcgeady is more Scottish than goram Also, I don't see any if this Scots v Irish argument, a greater affinity for Ireland ! with McCarthy. Wonder why...is it because he stated he picked the international team that picked him first.
That's just the thing. He never "changed" allegiances. His allegiances just don't lie where you think they should. But again, that is his choice. Not yours.
But that isn't the argument Eric presented is it? He is arguing that you should play for the country of your birth. Clearly neither do that. Clearly all three have a strong affinity with another country. In my opinion, McCarthy played the situation very well. He was a child when he made his choice. He was under extreme and prolonged pressure to change his mind throughout his teen years and he never relented. I think that says it all really. It isn't up to you to decide. That is a fact.
The pressure put on McCarthy to switch to Scotland was quite disgraceful IMO. The comments he made were on the back of a prolonged attack on him by the media, he just gave some ****ty excuse as to why he chose Ireland over Scotland to try and diffuse the situation.
im not arguing against the fact they have a strong affinity for Ireland ... They do, fir whatever reason...I believe mcgeadys is due to strong connection with his Irish grandfather . The crux of my argument is against the grandparent rule... I have an issue with it...one being one you citied I.e. Bruce's son. i never decided anything... I stated facts. Born and raised in Scotland to Scottish parents... I don't see how that doesn't make a Scotsman . However, if you exercise a right to claim heritage through your grandparents then so be it...I do not believe it right.
I quite agree. I think he was badly let down by his international manager and his club manager at that time. He was the only one that came out of it with any degree of credit.
I am also critical of how the grandparent rule is exploited. McGeady is the absolute embodiment of it working. You can believe what you want but that isn't going to change what either of them think and that is the only thing that counts at all. You can call them Scotch if you want. They identify themselves as. Irish. So it is a fact that they are Irish.
I don't know. You'd have to ask some of the posters from the North of Ireland what they think about that. There are UDA guys cutting about with Irish issued passports and conversely I work with a guy who is a fluent Irish speaker heavily involved in his GAA club who has a UK issued passport.... Much to my merriment. Plus, you are speculating.
Can I say for once I just don't care who plays for who I would have loved to have seen McGeady and McCarthy play for Scotland but it was their choice in the end, I know McGeady probably felt badly let down by Scotland who could have had him, of McCarthy I know nothing of his upbringing or background but if he is anything like a lot of my mates growing up the he will have an affinity for Ireland even if he feels Scottish. It's possible to love more than one woman so I don't see how it's not possible to feel both Scottish and Irish at the same time.
And I maybe speculating but I'm confident I am right ... unless Scottish parents applied fir an Irish passport fir their child born n raised in Scotland ...
You brought up what passports they may hold as a means of identifyimg their nationality. It is the same issue.
