I suppose the ideal position would be when it wasn't viewed as a slur, so no one would mention it at all. However, I doubt we will ever get to the position where a heterosexual man won't be bothered by being considered gay. I'm sure there are players known to be gay, but they don't want to give ammunition to opposition fans (or even their own fans).

I remember he was called gay because he read The Guardian. Not only is it homophobic, it's classist and anti-intellectual.

Happens to me too....you have to quote it to see it, then go back and add some comment so you don't look nuts.

I like the fact that he named names. It was his final reckoning with these players, several of whom are meant to be respected pundits.
So, Andy Townsend, Robbie Savage, Robbie Fowler, and others, you may have finally learned your lesson.

The really ironic thing is that when one hears Graeme Le Saux on those occasions where he is a co-commentator, he is cultured, thoughtful, really knows what he is talking about and expresses himself well. I'd take him as a pundit any day over the present company because he has no side and no prejudice.

Well played Mark, 5 of the seven predicted results were 2-0's.

The Guardian's far too biased to be described as intellectual.

Yeah Iceland was great. It's such a rugged, wild place, desolate but in a good way. The day before we got there, there was an artic storm so it was covered in thick snow, (except for a bit on the south coast), it was pretty amazing. I'd definitely recommend it.

Seems both Savage and Fowler were on Football Focus earlier - I wonder if anything was said about it today?

It was dreadful what Graeme went through. It was bullying pure and simple. There are some people who will go on about it being banter and you should be able to put up with it, but constant taunts undermine the victims self esteem until life becomes a hell. I think Le Saux actually had a lot of strength and got through it because he started off with reasonable self esteem. Without it he would have folded. No wonder gay players don't come out.

To be fair the programme was up front about it and both apologised. Doesn't make it ok but until someone invents time travel that's all that can be done. I think the culture is a lot better now, although clearly some players will want to do without the "next gay player" media spotlight.

I bet there are talented footballers who gave up before their careers got going rather than risk being outed and subjected to abuse (or at least being isolated at work).

I know Fowler has commented on it before. Said he had apologised for it (to Le Saux personally) and was ashamed of the way he acted as a youngster. We can only hope he's being genuine when he says that.
