Who said they were advised at all? they consider themselves Irish, so they play for Ireland. Their heritage is Donegal. No biggie. Jussawayitis.

Hope he does well, always liked McGeady. Torn face wee moaner at times but hey ho, he's certainly got the ability.
I dislike the grandparents rule in international football... And I'd rather they two played for the country of their birth/where the we're brought up and where they got their footballing education. Thewayitshouldbe
I only have a problem with guys doing it who have no affinity for the country they play for. Both of these Irish lads clearly do and clearly always have. I remember when Dave Kitson was good. Kevin Doyle was on at him to declare for Ireland. Kitson said no despite it being unlikely he'd get a game for England. His rationale was that it wouldn't feel right. That is fair enough. The moral impediment is not there for these lads. I know in a roundabout sorta way I brought it up, although it wasn't what I intended, it is a shame that this debate comes up every time those lads names get a mention. I only brought it up because I live in the North West and all of the Irish lads at Everton have connections with this area. The guy who gave Ireland their two biggest ever wins was Scotch. He didn't have the same affection as these two bucks. Another with less affection for Ireland was captain for a World Cup. Both are legends and developed a real and lasting love for the country, but it wasn't their preferred option as it was with McGeady and McCarthy.
No offence...but that's a load if ****e. 1 they 're not Irish. They were born to Scottish parents in Scotland. 2 they haven't always had an affinity for Ireland. Mcgeady played for Scotland schools. There was a rule at Celtic meaning he had to give it up. McCarthy said he would have picked Scotland if they'd have asked first. Scotland are a victim if circumstance...not some patriotic dilemma.

For me, only those born there or to native parents should have the right to call themselves a particular nationality. Grandparent rule and residency rules should be scrapped in international football.
It's not ****e Pud, you just disagree with me. I'm sure you've seen the footage of McGeady cutting about in an Ireland Jersey. As I recall it was the 94 one. It would have been a hell of a lot easier for both of them to just play for Scotland. McCarthy especially when Trappatoni just wasn't playing him. It's a lot easier for their critics to dress it up as professional expediency. They wanted to play for Ireland.
But that is very different to McGeady. That is all I'm saying. He wanted to play for Ireland so he did. Alex Bruce on making his debut for Ireland was quoted as saying that "it's every schoolboys dream to play for a country". I have always had a problem with that. Now he plays for the regional representative side up at Windsor park, at least he got to say that once he played for A country. And I am acutely aware that some of Ireland's great successes have come through grannying from folk who have never seen the place but like Dev, I'd probably take it if it brought more of it..... But that is absolutely not what McGeady is.
About a quarter of the population of Britain derived from Ireland at some point in the last hundred or so years, don't be begrudging us a couple of footballers being sent back the other way ya bunch of ****s.
Its daft though. You don't get to choose where you are born, so you shouldn't be able to choose what country you play for.
What if you are born on a plane? Things are just not that simple. You are representing a nation and if you are of that nationality, then you should be able to chose to represent that nation.
