Not at all. It's merely that I cannot stand all of this bull-**** eulogizing over a player who, whilst he has undoubtedly been a good and loyal servant of our club, hasn't exactly set the world on fire. When did he win the Golden Boot, or even come close? He's been an "okay" player, but certainly no "true legend" as is going to be made out by non-Spurs-supporting media idiots, over the next few weeks.
Another couple of poorly marked set-pieces, which Palace fail to convert. Really needs to be addressed.
140-odd goals in 360-odd appearances. 5 seasons for us he's scored at least 15 (in all comps). Broke the record in Europe earlier in the season too. Not just "okay" stats really - I think that's a little harsh
Have a look at Chivers' stats. Compare a "true" legend's stats with those of Defoe. No, I'm not being harsh, I'm being reasonable.
No denying Chivers' stats are awesome. But I disagree with comparing a player from 30-40 years ago with 1 now when we all know damn well the game is different.
Awful first half, much better start to the second and then a rather poor finish to the game. Lots of work needed, despite a good result. Up to fifth and with positive goal difference, prior to some important games over the rest of the weekend.
When Chivers was doing his stuff, he had to contend with the likes of Billy Bremner, Norman Hunter, and Tommy Smith, blokes who could not only break your legs, but who were given the leeway to do so in the rules - unlike in today's game, where contact is fast becoming outlawed.
A useful 3 points, today, but we've got to put this into perspective. Had we been playing a half-decent time, the game would have been over by half-time. We won this game, not because we were good, but because Palace were so very poor.
My reason for rate jd highly are.... When he joined in jan 04 we were **** and we remained **** until early 2005. He went from 1st choice to 3rd choice after berbatov came but continued to try. He left in jan 2008 when he could of stayed and got to sit on the bench at wembly for the league cup final, ran down his contract and got a bigger sgning on fee else where. He returned when we were **** and was part of us being a great team to watch. He coped with personal **** and always seemed to connect with the fans...and he scored a lot. In todays football it is rare for a player to show loyalty to us so for that I think he deserves to be highly rated...trouble is legend is used too easily imo.
I'm not knocking Defoe's loyalty - I couldn't, because it's there for all to see. But loyalty alone doesn't make him a legend. As for his goal-scoring record, it's good, but not the stuff of legends. Defoe did no more than one would expect from any half-decent Prem striker. If we make Defoe a "true Spurs legend" we'll make every average player who has the only redeeming characteristic of having been "loyal" a legend, and it will diminish the value of being called a legend. What true Spurs fan would want to diminish the value of the contributions of the likes of Greaves and Chivers by including every Tom, Dick or Harry in the "legends" club? I simply cannot understand the reasoning, here.
