Charlton Athletic v Barnsley Saturday 11th January 2014 3pm Kick Off Referee: Lee Williamson So with the festive fixtures done and dusted, and with the FA Cup 3rd Round weekend out of the way (bar the match itself)⦠League football returns to the Valley this Saturday with the visit of fellow strugglers Barnsley. In terms of being a Charlton Supporter a lot has happened since our last match (a 1-1 draw with Ipswich on New Yearâs Day), first came our new Belgian owner, Roland Dulchatelet followed swiftly by a new loan signing in Swedish Midfielder⦠Astrit Ajdarevic and finally the news supporters, players and management have been waiting to hear⦠the news that the infamous pitch, so cut up against Sheffield Wednesday would be re-laid. Back to the match against Barnsley though and Charlton find themselves facing a team where theyâve had up and down results over recent years⦠Undoubtedly the stand out match has to be the 6-0 victory at Oakwell in April 2013 which saw Charlton record their highest victory in a good number of years, in terms of players facing their old clubs, Ben Alnwick will be returning to a club where he made ten appearances in a yearlong spell whilst the most notable player to run out for both sides has to be Neil Redfearn who joined the Addicks as their first £1m player. Saturday 17th August 2013 â Barnsley 2-2 Charlton It was only the second trip on the road in the 2013/14 season for the Addicks yet for Jordan Cousins it proved to be just the beginning⦠After going 2-0 down at half-time, Chris Powell surprised many by bringing the youngster on, yet the change in personnel sparked revival and after Cousins scored Charltonâs first goal, the Addicks would go on to complete the comeback with Simon Church completing the scoring. Barnsley since then⦠Having one of the smallest budgets in the league⦠Barnsley are always going to struggle when it comes to competing and have only managed to pick up three wins this season (against Huddersfield, Middlesbrough and Brighton), a change of Manager in December saw David Flitcroft depart and the man who last got Barnsley into the Premier League (Danny Wilson) returned yet with only a further seven draws on top of the fixture back in September has Barnsley rooted bottom of the league and slowly being cast adrift of the rest of the pack. Charlton Team News After missing the match against Sheffield Wednesday both Chris Solly and Rhoys Wiggins returned against Ipswich last time out (Along with Goalkeeper⦠Ben Hamer) â Marvin Sordell was injured in that fixture and is expected to be out for a number of weeks whilst Cameron Stewart played his last game for Addicks before joining Leeds United on a permanent deal⦠The most interesting factor will be whether new signing Ajdarevic has enough match fitness to play any part or whether this game will come slightly too soon. Great work again, A4L, although I expect your run of predicting the right team will come to an end. I expect Jackson to play on the left, and Church to play up front with Kermit. Maybe it's become a habit, but I'm expecting another draw.
Yeah would be extremely surprised if Powell went for my line-up (like wise I expect it to actually be Church up front with Kermo with Stephens on the left with Jacko up the middle) Not sure what you mean about me predicting the right team though... think I've only managed it once lol!
yeah, I expect a draw, which like the one against the Massives, will leave me unhappy. A lot has changed since then (though not the excellent A4L thread) so anything could happen, but currently, we're on an unbeaten run, so deep down, I hope for a win. 2-2
I agree that this match could well be a bore draw yet I reckon that hinders on whether David Perkins is in the side for Barnsley, if so then CP's instructions to Cousins should certainly be to get in that guys face and stop him from passing the ball around (as he absolutely controlled that first half against from reports I heard earlier in the season)
A4L I was at Oakwell last season for one of the most surreal afternoons in my entire Charlton supporting career. Could it happen again tomorrow? No. I was annoyed to read the report this week about the real reason for the state of our pitch. Unacceptable.
Nice one A4L! I started off in the mindset that our unbeaten run will come to an end - it just seems to be the CAFC way to ruin it against a struggling team. But doing my weekly accumulators, I opted for CAFC in my 5 homes. I don't think it will be pretty, but think we can get a couple of goals against their defence and think with Solly and Wiggins back and in form will be able to keep them out. Will be interesting to see Dale Stephens body language at the end of the game. If he plays. 2-1 (Church and Kermo)
My acca for today (home wins) - Everton/Norwich Tottenham/Palarse Cardiff/Wets Yeovil/Burnley ...(away win) Brighton/Birmingham Rotherham/Crewe
Not bad at all, AH. Going to do my bets at the game today. Haven't had much luck online recently. Cheeky £10 on Chelsea at 2-0 for the lunch time KO.
Not sure if I'd risk a penny on the Barnsley match. At home, and showing a bit of form of late, it should be a no brainer, and the takeover effect should push us on, byt CP is currently in charge because Charlton lost their first match under the previous regime 4-2 against Swindon, so the form book is useless at the Valley.
It's not just the cancellation, but doing it so late! What about all the away fans travelling down from Barnsley, plus the Addicks coming in from afar. Very poor to be honest.
Should have just put the game on, (I say not looking at the pitch). It cant have been that bad if it's been covered so far? Ebbsfleet have had less games called off than us this season, it's a joke and we're starting to become a joke as well.
