Indeed. Reading a book called 25 Things They Don't Tell You about Capitalism by Ha Joon Chang atm. Unfettered, free markets HAVE FAILED. Doesn't mean capitalism has, or that communism is the answer, just that the Anglo-American free-market approach has, and it doesn't serve the society. You see, that's the point - Libertarians/Neo-Cons think society/community is there to support the free-market, whilst many of us think the other way around.

I despise the idea of third and fourth generation welfare dependency (I'd bring back grammar schools for a start) and I don't believe it's the job of 90% to carry 10%, but.... it's the 21st century, not Victorian England or the Roman Empire. If some are living in great poverty whilst some are living in great wealth then that society will inevitably fail, and that has been the social contract that has driven society since the birth of civilisation. The world decided - rightly- that Marxism had failed after @80 years. Adam Smith has had nearly three times that amount of time, and left completely unadjusted or unregulated it's been kept on because it makes a big and powerful enough minority happy at the expense of the majority. We should not then be surprised if the poor and dispossessed don't accept this situation.

A true devotee of Marxist-Lenninism would argue that the collapse of the Russian Soviet empire was due to there not being enough Marxist-Lenninism rather than any effect of the so called Free Markets or Neo-Cons. And to some degree they have an argument. However even such devotees would have to accept that their philosophy that just as in capitalism an elite will always be formed and maintained via the disadvantage of the majority.

However, this is a football forum and this debate is probably better continued on one of the many economic and/or political forums <ok>

unfettered capitalism cannot fail... why? cos when things go belly up there's money to be made... make it on the way up and the way down.. thats how they like it.

nobody cars who suffers, just how much money they can make.

this global crisis has been baout the us failing to save lehman brothers but everyone else is making tonnes of cash off it.

the europeans have ensure every failed stupid state pays back its debts and frankly people are buying up junk bonds for 30 pence on the pound and raking it in.

in cyprus the took money out of accounts didn't they? just robbed people. in ireland they raided people's pensions. greece is payig 5 or 6% interest on loans... italy was never touched and continues to run up debt.

everyone is happy. the americans continue to print money... the chinese continue to buy their debt.... the world's population continues to rise exponentially.

welfare dependency and state pension dependency are a disgrace but the reality is socialism won't fix it. it'll just give more. the only people who can haul themselves out of the dole is the person themselves.

its like telling the chinese you don't like their human rights record so you won't buy or sell to them while o the other hand don't allow gay marriage here. look after yourself first.

we need to drag kids through school and beat them through uni to get them out of the trap. I need to go do it today!

the easy option is what socialism created. eaiser to pay them to do nothing to labour's thinking.

Me too. I used to struggle with this. I went to grammar school. Looking back, I think that was the best educational system as it matched everyone's personal skill sets to the right place of secondary education on most occasions. Was it elitist? That's what I've struggled with over the years. But I now don't think it was. I just think it was the right way. Anyway, that's a massive topic for debate separately.

  18. This is true. Was only talking the other day about this. I used to get up, have some breakfast and go out. More than likely play footy all day and not go home until it starts getting dark. When home it was dinner, bath then bed. And repeat <laugh>

Nowadays kids can't even play in the garden on their own!

them was the days gerrez <laugh>

sad when you think about it though, next door neighbour had high fence put up all round as next to pavement and had youngsters, but had to lower the fence as someone complained(what was the problem couldn't spy on them sad ****ers!) so easy for someone walking passed to just lift a kid from over the fence, so cant be left on own now days.

when i was younger i used to be out untill 11 at night sometimes later, also didn't have the ball games bullshit so was better.

  20. I witnessed the no ball game signs going up. We was always getting into trouble because we ignored them <laugh>

What annoyed me about that was it was the people in the neighbouring properties that complained and got the signs put up. I often responded with "sorry, was the field not here when you bought the house?" <laugh>
