I was pondering how footy in Newcastle might have turned out if Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End had never merged to form NUFC and whether or not you lot had ever given this any thought?

Assuming both clubs had done reasonably well (a few titles each, a few cups each, european footy, etc.) would they be similar in size to NUFC, or half as big? Would the rivalry between the two meant that SAFC would have been less relevant to the fans of either or both? Might Fat Fred and Mike Ashley have bought one each and had a competition to see who could make the biggest arse of themselves?

    Just wondering....

Sunderland would have taken Boro's place. That third team that really want a big rival but cant really find one.

Not one for "bigging myself up" really. Just come on here for craic with some of the sensible mags, who don't default to delusions of grandeur mode when anyone from Wearside hoves into view.

play nice wasn't really decent craic though was it seemed liked a veiled attempt at wumming
this bit sort of gave that away.was reading it at first and thought it was going to be a fair thread but as i said the dig at the end sort of ****ed it up for me like
but to play along i don't even think you'd come into the equation like most 2 team cities the rivalry would be between the 2 clubs

oh yeah one more thing just because i don't obsess about your team doesn't mean i have delusions of grandeur just means you're not that important to me would rather look at the bigger picture and try and be best in the league not have my ambition as "as long as we finish above/or beat the mackems"

    edit:
think you read me wrong there i was on about your club not you personally

Very true. It looks like you could have a completely different team by the next derby.

After 2 years in the job Bruce still has to make major changes in the squad. Surely by now he should have got his squad together and now just be making minor improvements by signing a couple of players. Having to sign around 10 new players looks like he hasn't got a clue. I know the loan signings have not helped, but surely some of those were brought in with the intention of being signed on a permanent basis.

Some players started well and then fell away badly though. The first half of last season we were getting results, no problem and then...

OK, there were injuries, but that can't excuse some shocking performances. Jordan Henderson dropped way down in my estimation and £20M for him now was good business. Should give us the spendies to stiffen the spine of the team. Hope so anyway.

They'd both have been similar size to someone like Villa. Ashley would've bought one and everyone would've switched to the other and the club Ashley bought would've gone into administration. And that's exactly what would've happened.

    Good question that.

Shame I have no idea what the answer would be but here's a question for you. Should Sunderland's stadium be north of the river ie where it is now/Roker/Fulwell or should it be south of the river near the city centre where it was first built (I think) in Hendon or somewhere?

    Honest question.

    about the injuries
what's the craic that was floating about a while back about bruce dismissing the medical teams advice and asking the players if they were fit to play instead surely that was bollocks?

And we were mocked for flogging Mandy?! <laugh>
Loans haven't helped I don't think Sid, any news on whether Welbeck & Onouha (sp?) will make the switch permanent? Wes Brown & O'Shea could good signings for you, plenty of PL experience.

I agree with your view on Henderson, £20 million is great business for you and could provide funds to bring in 3-4 decent signings. It's much like the sale of Andy Carroll. Most people were gutted when he went, but if that money is used wisely it could really push our club on. if we picked up Cabeye, NZogbia, Taylor, Ba and another quality striker we would still have a sizeable amount of cash left over to help cover their wages.
