Soon all prisoners, except those on long sentences will be allowed to vote; yet more genius from the EU; this is clearly a dumb idea, but then again so is allowing EVERYONE the same say. In the book/film Starship Troopers, only those who've served in the military are allowed to vote, the idea being, only by being willing to die for your country can you have the right to decide what's best for all, it might not be a good idea, but it makes more sense than giving any mong the same power as those who can make balanced judgements. Should we limit voting to those who can actually think for themselves? ...or maybe voting should be compulsory for all, if you don't like any candidates, just spoil your paper?
I'm sorry, I loved the book as a kid and just though that they couldn't ruin it, how wrong I was As for your comment Ian Beale, even in jest it's poor, if not in jest, I just hope that one day you meet... please log in to view this image
No Some people are too stupid to vote. I saw a vox pop segment before the last election where they stopped an elderly couple in the street and asked who they were voting for. The woman turned to her husband and said, 'Who are we voting for, again?' This husband effectively has 2 votes, so his wife's 'right' to vote should be removed. People unable to identify the leaders of the main parties clearly cannot be informed enough to make sensible decisions at the ballot box. These people too should be barred from voting.
Not long ago some people voted in the referendum for AV, the vote was pointless, not only is AV a poor substitute for real reform, but a large percentage of those who voted didn't even understand what they voted for, politicians lied about what the vote was about (nothing new there) and it ended up with just a 42% turnout It's things like this that make me feel we need to change the system, personally I'd veto the vote for anyone with an IQ less of than 100, but I'd also accept forced voting for all, either would be better than the current system.
