I suspect this will turn into a ****fest as Dai regurgitates old arguments and that's not my intention, so Dai - please stay on topic and within the narrow parameters of the thread if you feel you must comment. I have you on Ignore anyway but others don't. <ok>

OK, Not sure if Laudrup has been misquoted or whether he meant to say this but I've only just spotted this even though it was published 3 days ago. He's quoted by the Beeb as saying:

"....for me, I always said I'd rather win against Crystal Palace or West Ham or Stoke or Norwich or a side who are on more or less the same points as us. For me it's great because it's great for the players and the fans but if you ask me separately just for me, no, nothing special."

For someone who takes cup competitions seriously I'm rather surprised Laudrup has said this. Any manager of a smaller club like ours who turns over the Premership Champions in any competition should find that win pretty special. Frankly, I'm amazed that he doesn't.

There seems to be a hint of the mentality that Jenkins mentioned recently in that our players should go out believing we can beat anybody whereas Laudrup appears to target wins against teams outside the top 6 - those in "our league" as he puts it - and figuratively shrugs his shoulders when we lose to those sides.

Let's be clear, I'm absolutley chuffed we have Laudrup here and he continues to be excellent for us but if there's one flaw is this it? Or should we not read too much into it?

No, we shouldn't read too much into it :p You do realise he's a time traveller and is bored with us beating Man Utd?

Seriously though, I can understand what he's saying - the points matter. If we beat them in the final it would matter as we'd have won something. It matters to the fans and he's acknowledged that - "For me it's great because it's great for the players and the fans..."

I think we're too used to "manager (bull)speak" and it's still refreshing he's honest about it all. He's also won a lot at the highest level, maybe it takes a lot to excite him!

Don't think you can read into it. He's either saying "Look at me I've played in much bigger games in my career" which I doubt or he's saying "I'm looking at the big picture and this is not as important in context of our season as people are making out". The latter I believe is fair enough. He could also be saying that "I expect to win against big teams and believe in my players"

So as you can see, reading into it gets you nowhere.

Roll on Saturday for a repeat result

I can see that side of it but for me personally if I was a manager of say, Fulham, and my players had just knocked Man U out of the Cup I would personally find that 'special'. I agree it's not as important as the League and Prem survival but it's special nonetheless. It just seemed really strange to me but maybe I'm missing something.

He probably does find it special but is playing it down knowing that the match at the weekend is far more important. Should we win there again, and we CAN, then I'd expect him to then come out and say its special. I think it just shows he's fully concentrated on the game at the weekend.

Sir Alex retired at the right time and left moyes with the weakest Man Utd side for decades, they have too many old players and sub standard that befits a world class team like united. This has resulted as a bit of a leveler this season as united's results have proved so far this season. It comes at no surprise that team's of our standard have more chance of getting a result... <ok>

Sometimes I think Laudrup is too detatched emotionally from the game. Having said that, it may help him think more clearly - but he should allow himself to enjoy these occasions now and again!

The weakened Man U team is a red herring. It was the strongest Man U team they could put on the park that day - same as us. Moyes' comments beforehand showed how much he wanted to win the game. For our fans a win against Man U is a magnificent feat - they are one of the great clubs of Europe along with Real Madrid, AC Milan, Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich etc. We should celebrate accordingly <ok>

Got to remember if ML had come out saying it was a fantastic win, maybe it could have sent the players into a flase sense of pride with the game coming up, so to try and keep their feet on the ground, played down the importance. Could just be tactics

The manager is no one's fool , he gives himself time to absorb the question before answering and that answer is no different than what you'd expect.Keep the players feet on the ground this week is the task he has to manage .Confident but not cocky is the order off the day and by those comments I think he'll have achieved it.

how can it be a red herring?? every man and his dog knows that man utd are not as they should be for a couple of seasons and without RVP and or Rooney they are just another team. Man utd have never been a one man team as it did not matter who played they would always be feared, Its not the case this season even though its not easy to beat them as they are as you have to work hard to get a result and we did. You watch the difference when we play them next especially as Rooney looks to be playing we will see that they are not exactly as strong as in the past but they will have a player who can win them matches..

On January 5th 2014 it was the strongest 11 they could put on the pitch - same as us.

We could win the premier league, and you would still find something to dampen the occasion.

This site is easy to work out. There's some good people here like Lurky and Neveroffside as you can see. Then there's a few twats like me and PGF white. Daiswan is a walking talking gibbering fart. If it all goes tits up you get a ****ing Peterborough fan called Simple minge or something show up and tell you off. Not forgetting the occasional visit from some scum wums. I call them the scum bum chums. Hope that helps cphswan
