simply put when half the world is still illegal the gay community need "heros" to stand up and make the world change. to think cos people can do whatever in US or here means the whole world is gay friendly is naive
It is quite surreal, just looking at the Sky Sports headlines and they are FIFA: No Quatar decision Moyes: No Coentrao deal Pellegrini: Lescott will stay Hitzlsperger: I am gay WTF
Shouldn't be a big deal... but with, what 1 in 12 people presumably gay, its a big deal that of the hundreds of footballers only a couple of gays are known. Obviously in the footballing world... being gay must still hinder careers. I'm sure teammates must not like communal showers. Or maybe they do. In university would creep me out... one guy... a big guy... would spend way too long in the shower area as if waiting for people and when you went in he would keep creepily staring at you. Everyone tried avoiding going when he was in there.
I prob does or thats the fear but thats why i said some senior guys who've made their moeny should come out... like ronaldo. but seriously if you look at the routes players take like going to ukraine or russia or wherever.... saying you are gay means you might get arrested... or worse... Italy would be the same IMO. I think that fear is there but until some people make it "ok" it'll stay there
Someone announcing that they are gay is like a cry for attention IMO. If gay people wish to be seen in the same light as straight people then why make an announcement? Why not just live your life however you please? People will soon figure it out when your holding hands with another male! (maybe need to include kissing and **** for females )
I agree with this. I think Tom Daley came out so he would feel comfortable being seen with the same man in public without gossip mongers circling. In other words out yourself before others do it for you.
Someone should start a campaign to pick a day when gay players can all come out together. This would make it easier I guess, and put to bed this frankly daft situation. 1st of May 'Gay Day' that type of thing?
why? they would be offended if i started a campaign for straight day, so why should they if they want to be seen as no different in society get a day to celebrate this, no need for it. depending on your interpretation of the word i suppose lol, but now days normal seems to be the ruddy minority.
well... its like this either there is a flood of guys just waiting for a few to make it ok OR.... there's not really and its no big deal. the reailty is we cannot simply think about our won corner of the world. This is a global issue as football is a global sport. If someone in england comes out... is it a big deal? no... i think nobody would pass much remark. In spain? I think that player would be in toruble... In italy... I'd rather be if this is not to racist but i'd rather be black and deal with the racists than deal with a whole stadium of homophobes. If a player is in eastern europe it'd be even worse. In hsort there's good reason players fear coming out... and thats global. I think here you'd probably not be held back by doing it.
I'm still not sure there is a need to officially come out. The only reason for doing so would be to stop tongues wagging when you are seen out and about with your partner. But really other than those like the Rooneys, who do we see in the media out all the time with their wives? So unless you have a hectic social life, in and out of pubs and clubs and are filmed while doing so, why bother announcing you're gay? Does one 'brave' soul as he's made out to be, open the door for others so it becomes accepted, I'm not sure. As you infer mito there's a similarity with race and acceptance. I think a player in a CL team and the likelihood of having to go play a Russian fixture, would think twice before coming out, players lower down the leagues wouldn't have the same problem so you start having tiers.
well... you are right. i guess you have to put it in context of a gay man wanting to walk hand in hand with his partner down the street. Right now all sports people would hide the relationship which can't be right. that's about it. it'd be about getting to the point where nobody would bat an eyelid if their centre forward was dating their full back... (highly unlikely) but you know... if you've wags and one or two were make the tabloids would go mad for a while. You are most likely therefore right about a few making it acceptable for the rest. i'm probably being naive on that. I do think though that you know... gerrard and his wife are always pictured. the tabloids love a wag.. cheryl cole... etc etc etc. I guess thinking on it now... it'd be fairly horrendous for some gay player and his partner to have to suffer even the "brave" headlines. look at brave X, and his hunky partner... the press would go mad... I guess thinking on it i'd understand even if the football world would embrace it and the pay and chances were not affected that you'd not want it.
