Sunderland are close to signing Argentine defender Santiago Vergini from Estudiantes de La Plata.

The 25-year-old centre-back won a national league title at Newell's Old Boys in June under now-Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino, but after just five months at Estudiantes he is closing in on a Premier League move.

The defender needs only to agree a pay-off with Estudiantes, thought to be in the region of £400,000, to settle the remaining six months of his contract at the Estadio Unico.

Sunderland Sporting Director Roberto De Fanti has extensive contacts in South America and last week turned down the opportunity to sign Vergini's former teammate, Argentina forward Ignacio Scocco.

But Gustavo Poyet is set to give the green light for the defender to sign an 18-month deal with an option for an extra year if the move is a success.

Cuellar and Diakite already being off loaded as we speak mate and both wont be here next season. Roberge I'd stick with as I think he will benefit from his first season here and hes a footballing defender which is what the manger wants. I think he is a decent player tbh.

That smells of Gino Peruzzi. Can't be arsed with SAFC Source. He probably just wrote as told but that was a horrific saga.

Gino Peruzzi! Even at that early point, that was the beginning of when things started to go wrong! Up until that point everything was going hunky dory and our optimism was sky high!

    article translated reads :

He wants to go to the Premier
Vergini would all set to move to Sunderland and, therefore, asked the president from power. Click to him would be $ 700,000.

Santiago Vergini is starring in a controversial situation in Students. No provided training at the start of training camp and then it was revealed that he had asked 48-hour license. motif is intended to emigrate to English football and today asked President Enrique Lombardi to let him go to Sunderland. The former Newell's is on loan would terminate the contract and $ 700,000 platense club coffers. 's assignment Bugs was no option, so it fits like a good deal for the club. Is worth remembering that on campus since August, when it had been rumored that Gerardo Martino wanted to bring Barcelona.

Reports out of Argentina today suggest sunderland are close to signing Santiago Vergini of Estudiantes. Vergini only signed for Estudiantes in the summer from Newell's Old Boys but has already asked to leave the club amid rumours that the La Plata based club have failed to pay him. The club have since given the player permission to miss training and have said that they will listen to offers for the 25-year-old.

6'3" Vergini has six months remaining on his contract and is looking to have his contract terminated at the Estadio Unico, an action that would cost in the region of £425,000. A factor which may help Sunderland's cause is the fact that Estudiantes need the money as soon as possible to pay a debt that is owed to Mexican side Tigres by January 10th, otherwise they face the possible loss of three points due to a FIFA sanction.

Vergini has reportedly already agreed on a move to the Stadium of Light and is just waiting to tie things up with the Argentine side before finalising his move, should he sign he will become Gus Poyet's second signing of the window, after the Spanish left back Marcos Alonso joined on loan from Fiorentina.

Sounds like they need to get short for the good of their bank balance. I'd offer them a quid.

Anyone know anything about him? Is he even any good? Or just another squad player who'll sit in the reserves for a few months before declaring he "can't adjust to the pace of the premier league" and ****ing off back home? Sorry but I am very skeptical about South American imports after our last few forays into that market...
