Thomas Hitzlsperger announces he is gay. http://www.zeit.de/sport/2014-01/thomas-hitzlsperger-homosexualitaet-fussball In this day an age, who cares? Why the big fan fare? We has fans of football clubs don't care about the sexual preference of the guys putting on our clubs shirt, all that matters for me is that they help the team succeed? Or is it important? Does this issue need to be addressed in football, why couldn't he have "come-out" when still playing football. Is this the final taboo that needs to be taken down in football?

Good on him for having the balls to speak up about it, do I personally give a ****? Not really but it would be naive to think this wouldn't affect a player while playing. Unfortunately every club still has moronic fans and every club still has moronic players/staff...even the FA inclusion board hasn't been immune (oh the irony), the FA actually BACKED this guy despite his comments and he only resigned from the post this week due to public pressure: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...ent-despite-previous-homophobic-comments.html Why would they bother coming out when the organisation they play under is more prehistoric than the Flintstones? The issue does need to be tackled (no pun intended) but it needs to be done at all levels and not just left up to the players to take all the responsibility on their shoulders.
Exactly mate, why these coming out stories are still headline news is beyond me, people are gay get over it. However in the sporting world and culture I think there are still issues that need addressing, sport is a competitive, masculine environment and being gay still carries associations of weakness and femininity I guess, putting that individual at an unfair disadvantage. A lot of footballers in particular seem to be impressively retrograde in attitude and childish.
Whilst making a funny, Luv's made a valid point, in this day and age, coming out to the papers and saying "I'm a stark raving heterosexual" should be treated the same was as someone coming out as being Gay, i.e. Not news worthy! But like others have already mentioned, I guess society isn't there yet.. #shame
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...dfielder-Thomas-Hitzlsperger-reveals-gay.html He admits that he played for Everton.
exactly, doesn't bother me one bit. thing i find odd though as he said with England Italy etc not having an issue generally if you are gay, why has it taken him so long to come out. hes gay great, but sadly i suspect an alterer motive for this and that is just wrong.
Still sad that in this day and age people have trouble with they're, their and there. Sorry, couldn't resist. I wouldn't say its sad, sports stars who are gay are coming out publicly more so now and I think it just helps and might give others confidence.
i don't care. Its about time a few just got it over with then everyone can go on as normal and forget ti. cristiano ronaldo should really come out.
Being a gay footballer is a big deal, how do people still not get that? The OP shouldn't be news but unfortunately it is because the tribal and closed minded nature of football and football players means that being a gay footballer is really tough. I can't think of any current footballers in first division leagues that are openly gay, if a current pl player came out as gay itd be on the front pages
its sad but necessary for future generations. someone has to be the ones to stand up and normalise it rather than keep hiding in this day and age. who gives and f... but the guys who've made their money should be brave enough to just now go... ok i am... does it matter? and just bring and end to the everyones straight bravado in sport generally. only problem is probably actually our country will be first and then someone who is gay will play in europe v a team form eastern europe or spain or italy and get terrible abuse... the russians might refuse a visa! but someones got to break these guys crap and make them look the bigots they are.
It would be nice if people didn't feel the need to announce it to the world that they're gay, however in my opinion to get to that point, I think people in the public eye need to do it to raise the fact there is nothing wrong with it. Most people have no problem, but people still feel ashamed or worried about coming out so to have big sport stars or celebrities doing it should help young guys/girls do it.
