Sorry but both clubs have been very irresponsible here, not defending the police but safety should come first and last year the behavior before the match was poor (from both teams) and the behavior of the Newcastle fans after the match was dreadful. People should be complaining to both clubs not praising them.

 

Can't tar all the fans with the same brush but those involved in the trouble should be banned from the game.

 

Listen the vast majority of fans from both teams are well behaved and know where to draw the line but the behavior of the Newcastle fans who were causing trouble was embarrassing and gives the well behaved fans of Newcastle United a bad name. Fans don't feel safe when other fans want to fight, throw things at each other, was definitely smoke bombs being let off, probably by both and aimed at opposing fans from what I could see.

 

I agree that safety comes first, but that itself raises a couple of questions: Where do you draw the line on restrictions designed to increase safety? and do the measures the police keep putting in place increase safety?

Why is it always the innocent majority who are always most inconvenienced in the name of safety? Why do the authorities use every instance of trouble to take away the freedom of innocent people? The most obvious way to avoid trouble and keep everyone safe would be to play the game behind closed doors. I know that's not at all what you were saying, but its an exaggeration to illustrate the point. Why should a Sunderland fan living on Tyneside, or even in Northumberland, have to travel to Sunderland before heading back and then doing the same in reverse after the game to pick up the car? Why should they have less rights than any other group of visiting fans? To me it is lazy policing. They are saying that they can't (or wont) control without imposing mass restrictions on everybody while the majority are going about their normal, law-abiding way (a bit like kettling with demonstrations).

I'm also not sure that treating people like animals, herding them along their way in tribal groups is the best way to bring about civilised behaviour. Treat people like animals and they are far more likely to behave like animals.

I don't think Northumbria Police expected to have their bluff called on this one, but they have made a rod for their own backs. Sadly, it would not surprise me if the police response was to 'allow' trouble to start to attempt to save face. It may well not end well, but I don't believe for a second that this is not the fault of the police. If they hadn't told lies this wouldn't have happened.

Not having a go at you here cbrad, I just am sick to the back teeth of not being able to trust the police. They should be above this.

Of those arrested last year the vast majority hadn't even been to the game. They weren't fans - just dickheads.

 

Seem to remember hearing about youngsters throwing bricks at the Sunderland supporters coaches as I was coming out of the ground.

Very true. I know there were some who'd been to the game who got involved but they were a minority. All clubs have dickheads, but it seems only NUFC and SAFC get treated like this - and yet the trouble happens anyway.

 

I agree with that but their will still be some nuggets who will come looking for trouble.

 

Apparently the so called hard core Mackem and Toon hooligans meet in fields near Washington.
A copper mate told me it happens every derby.

I was tempted to make a joke about this thread being premature and linking it to Newcastle fans and whatnot but to be honest it would be like me taking the piss for you lot having noses on your faces.

It's never happened to me before has happened to me before.

I personally don't think Sunderland should be too cocky going into this one I believe there is always the possibility of Newcastle taking a point

On the timing of the game issue, bubble travel and fans behaviour, it is worth pointing out that out of the 90 odd arrests last year in April, only 6 of those people attended the match. This suggests there is not a great deal of need to control those attending the match as they are mainly just interested in football. The argument on timing is noon kick offs help stop the trouble. I'm not sure about this. Most just seem to start drinking at 7am or 8am which just means by mid afternoon they are wasted. Perhaps starting an evening kick off may only see people start at noon drinking wise and mean a less mashed set of casual supporters in the city centre. If they are intent on causing trouble then they tend to find a way whatever the time.

The two clubs supporters record is always painted in a poor light. Neither club have a set of angels but its no where near as bad as sometimes reported.

When my kids were at primary school a couple of mam's were bragging that their husband's were meeting up to fight Mackems in pre planned meet, that was in the early 200's and no they weren't your ordinary hooligans but business men. There kids were a nightmare no discipline, teachers were always wrong and they were always right.
