I drove down to Sheffield today, main reason was to try and win business from the flood misery of two years ago - it still rumbles on in insurance claims; scary, really! Job done I was driving back on the A1 when, about adjacent to, perhaps, Ripon, I looked to my right (east) and the Yorkshire Moors were dark and dank; very unwelcoming. It had been a beautiful drive down in the morning (now around 3 - 4pm) and my mind was distracted , so I was a little surprised at the change. My reaction was to look to my left (west) and what a dark, foreboding scene greeted me. It was like looking upon Lord of the Rings; just the towers, lightening and suspended eye missing from Mordor. Having passed L***s I knew the Orks were behind me,but the thought of the Smoggies made me wonder what is happening to our weather. Seriously, it was pitch black, real Hammer weather. What weather have you encountered? Hope you are all okay!? Thinking of our American and Canadian cousins, some of you are really getting it bad; are you okay and do you have any stories to tell?
Nice pun there. C4 have done 2 documentaries about our weather over the last 2 years, a decent watch but not overly insightful. Mostly comparisons between other strange periods of weather and now. I must say I didn't realise just how insane a few weeks of weather we had in the first half of 2012 until watching it.
Records show that the 4th of September 1752 was unusual in that on that date, there was no weather at all. FACT.
Or any day up to the 13th Sept. In fact due to the change to the Gregorian calendar we didn't have 3rd to 13 September 1752.
Heavy snow and impressive lightning on Orchard park, thirty years ago. We thought it was the end of days.
Our country would brick it if we got the arctic weather the US is getting... Some places there are getting -40. (the only temperature where both Celsius and Fahrenheit meet)
On the flip side to America, in Brisbane we are in our summer months and last night we had a very impressive storm. I love watching the lightning and hearing the thunder. I was walking to the train and could see bolt after bolt of lightning coming down in the distance. The sky got darker and darker until the storm was overhead, fortunately by which point I was on the train. A few years back I missed a spectacular occurance when the air around went a totally eerie shade of misty orange, as a heavy wind churned up sand from South Australia giving it that very scary appearance. I have a few pics of the back garden during it so might have to see if I can put one up. Here it is
i envy the temperatures in the US right now , i bought a nice hat with those flappy bits that cover the ears , ive only worn it once and it made my head too hot
Got caught in a hurricane of the coast of Mexico when I worked on the ships. It was a bit like this, only we were about twice the size of that ship.
I was there at the time - a pal of mine at Bond University had parked his car with the window slightly ajar and came back to find it full of the fine red dust. The storms affected much of the east coast and I went down to Sydney a few weeks later to find the opera house roof was still the colour of rust.
