I think the opposite. Worked for Fergie. Works for The Special One. Refs were/are scared ever to make decisions against complainers.

My issue with the situation as a Liverpool fan is this. Let's say a player abuses a referee. Clattenburg has been or should have been trained to deal with this situation. As someone in the officiating process they should fully understand that players will direct their ire at them, justifiably or not.

Is it right? Not always. In those cases the referee has the tools to dish out appropriate punishment. A yellow card. A red card. These are much more effective than an insult. Now I know what you'll say next. "He's only human and prone to human emotion". I'm sorry but that isn't good enough.

You wouldn't want the police to beat you senseless because the copper was having a bad day and you swore at him for giving you a speeding ticket.

If they are there to uphold impartial justice, then individual anger cannot come into play. If the referee cannot handle it, then they aren't cut out for the job. I've worked service jobs where customers have abused me on a daily basis. I didn't deserve it, yet I wasn't allowed to swear back at the customer. I was paid to be a professional representative of not only my company but the service industry as a whole. Clattenburg is paid to represent football, not just the association of referees. That being said so are the players. If a player goes overboard they should be punished too, more than they normally are in my opinion. However this is inevitable until the referees are properly trained and don't make so many mistakes anymore. In other words they need to get used to it.

Not to mention the prejudice it introduces. An insult will lead to future impartiality. If Clattenburg called Mikel a monkey (later disproven) then he has shown bias. Mikel could no longer expect fair treatment in that match or ever. Clattenburg has shown that he has something personal against the player. Even if it is a simple **** off, this means the next decision that needs to be made will have an element of preference to the referee. That isn't alright.

He said (allegedly) "you never used to be like this". He is stating that his current reputation has played a part in Clattenburg's mind. Clattneburg has formed an opinion on Lallana based on reputation. Whether or not this was before or after the call is irrelevant. That opinion is now there for the remainder of the match and any future matches officiated by Clattenburg.

I don't think Lallana is an idiot that would make up accusations if he didn't feel aggrieved at something. I also can't judge Clattenburg without the official recording which is usually inaccessible to the public. Until more transparency is introduced by the referee unions and organisations it has to be obvious why I cannot fully trust what they report.

Hope this is resolved without repercussions for Lallana otherwise we discourage others from coming forward.

You said it there yourself, Fergie & Mourinho are miles different to Poch & Saints. There was fear from officials of those guys/clubs... officials will not have the same worry about Saints get up to.

Thanks for a reasonable post, we don't think that it was Lallana that brought up the complaint, but the Club and in particular Poch who was closer to the action than most. Looks like your Gaffer is in trouble about talking out of turn about Refereeing decisions, I agreed at the time with what he said so have every sympathy.

I don't get your point at all. Yes they are currently miles different. I'm arguing that perhaps this is the start of trying to change that. Hence also, possibly, the appeal against the decision against Dani.

I suspect this might be the start of a considered campaign to change that by complaining every time we feel aggrieved. Thus, in time we will become as feared by referees as those two. NB. "Might".

Bloody Hell (awaits suspension for foul and abusive language), I can't believe a lot of what I am reading. We have some fans that must live in a monastery or just live life perfectly. It's just a comment from a referee and unless Saints come out and say that something worse than that was said, then it is getting a little silly.

    Get a grip

    Grow a pair.

Naughty ref. Bad ref. No treats ref.

Please Saints, come out and tell us what you think was said to Adam as it is a little embarrassing as it stands now.

Of course, that's what I meant. Most players will just complain about it to their managers. It's refreshing to see clubs standing up against poor officiating. It's a touchy subject. I do appreciate the difficulty of their job and believe they need protection from certain types of stress. But lately the standard has dropped.

Referees need to be trained heavily. They need to take more courses, to refresh their memories and sharpen their decision-making skills. Football does not have a great deal of rules, but those that exist can be extremely complicated. In fact you can look at it like the law. Definitions must be memorized and referred to in the heat of the game. Rules have to be compared. Where does unsportsmanlike behaviour begin and end? etc etc etc.

Over the past few years we have seen a drop in quality. It's getting to the point where it's difficult to name one match during the week without a contentious decision. I don't think we need to go down the route of computerized decisions, but increasing the quality of referees is a must. Physically and mentally, they need to get to a point where we can understand human error if it happens every now and then. Now it's just ridiculous and you hope for only one or two decisions per match.

I think Lallana/Poch/Southampton had every right to complain, no matter how insignificant the comment seems to us now. It shows bias and needs to be stamped out of the game.

Suspect they gave the gist of what was said rather than the actual words.

So, we're the top story on Sky Sports News for a spat over a referee. Are we a big club now?

There's no reason to believe it's not true! If someone was going to lie about it they would make up something a lot better than this! You just don't want it to be true.

That's quite embarrassing from Lallana to be fair. Pocket your 50k a week and get on with your life, Adam.

All of your points about extra training, etc are valid but one-sided. Perhaps players should be trained on not abusing refs too... it's just the flip side. I don't really think it is a comment that shows bias really, just someone reacting (wrongly) when fed up with being shouted at.
