Who said one man doesn't make a team! Napoli won their only Serie A Italian Championships in 1986/87 and 1989/1990, placing second in the league twice, in 1987/88 and 1988/89. Other honors during the Maradona era at Napoli included the Coppa Italia in 1987, (second place in the Coppa Italia in 1989), the UEFA Cup in 1989 and the Italian Supercup in 1990. Maradona was the top scorer in Serie A in 1987/88.
So Marra played in all 11 positions? You're talking as if he only needed another 10 bodies around him mate. Sorry doesn't hold water, he also played with some canny players for Argentina.
The Greatest - for me anyway. Left foot or right foot it didnt matter and he could head, volley and produce the most sublime arrogant peices of skill. My all time football hero as a kid. Idolised him in the 70's. Enjoy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr1VWSntqRg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YU-k-Ots3iY&feature=related And he invented this one, which has been copied by every other player from school yard to Champions League ever since. www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1k7DGqRF5g Player: 9 Dutch titles 6 Dutch Cups 1 La Liga 1 Copa del Rey 3 European Cups 2 UEFA Cup Winners 1 Intercontinental Cup 3 times Ballon d' Or (only 3 men ever achieved this so far) 520 games / 291 goals 48 Caps / 33 goals - retired age 29 Manager: 1 European Cup 3 UEFA Cup Winners 2 Dutch Cups 4 La Liga titles 1 Copa del Rey 2 times Manager of the year La Liga
You're a typical tit who knows **** all about football but thinks he knows a lot. It wasn't an average Argentinian team. It was actually rather good. Couple that with Maradona, a handball and some fortunate fixtures, and it's why they won. Any phenomenal player can play a big role in how well a team plays, but one player doesn't make a team. You have a goalie, defenders, midfielders and other attackers, so unless that one player has the vast majority of the teams possession, then the rest of the team plays a big role as well. That's proven when Argentina won 3-2 with no goals from Maradona against a tough West Germany side. But I am speaking to the guy who thinks that the greatest player in history should be determined by whether they've won a World Cup medal. **** me
Yet again, a prolonged debate about football ALMOST happens, and then an ultra moronic mackem comes along and acts like a twat and ruins it. Oh well. Maybe next time.
IMO Messi is better than Maradona. Maradona was better than Pele. That said. No one, and I mean no one will ever eclipse the legend that is Johann Cruyff.
Totally agree with the OP. Maradona made other players around him look good, even though they were nowhere near his standard. This is the hallmark of a truly great player. He shared this quality with Gazza. Let's remember he also inspired Napoli to a scudetto win for the first time in ages.
You can't refute that George best was undoubtedly a footballing genius and had the ability to be mentioned alongside the greatest players of all time. However, the two reasons why I think he falls short of the likes of Pele, Maradona and Cruyff is that his life style meant that his best days were comparitively short lived, and also that he never had the chance to prove himself on the international world stage. having said that, he was still one hell of a footballer.
I think we all need to take amoment and ponder why Daryl Murphy hasn't made this thread yet. Every manager he's played for obviously rates him, and he had a special skill of making the rest of the team look good.
diego a great player(didnt like the way he lived eg:drugs handballs and being an argie)seen maradona play great skill strength and balance and very brave he got kicked to bits v brazil at italia 90 havent seen messi live but he looks a better player shrewder but with all the same assets of maradona
Cest, Thank's for the memories. Watched him in the '74 WC as a littlin & was blown away. Edison Arantes do Nascimento is still my No1 though. Showd the youngin aged 9 who uses "The Turn" to good effect in his games when he gets a chance the clip & he was amazed.
