How would you judge TJ and Slaters reign? I'll go for a 7/10. They reduced debt and got us promoted. But failure to back CP in 3 transfer windows was disappointing. Not going to get involved with everitt et all. Solid job IMO
yep, an 8. stopped a downward trend. streamlined the club - got rid of half the staff and we still existed, goes to show how much bloat and money grabbers we had on board before. they got us promoted, fixed the screen and kept season ticket prices moderate. tailed off at the end by not being able to push us further, but they go with my thanks and appreciation - been a good few years.
7 out of 10, they stopped the rot, brought in Chris Powell, changed the senior management. Yes we lost some good people and some not so good but we are still here and still (at present) in the Championship. Shame Cash lost his bottle
A speculative 8 for very much the same reasons as above. They got an extra point for excellent PR skills; Slater - particularly during the title winning season - was very prominent and never put a foot wrong. Although I was incandescent when Parky got it!
7/10- I liked their investment in the Academy, and whoever the new owners are I hope it continues. I'm not convinced that CP buys into this vision, otherwise he'd be at the U-18 and U-21 games.
9, a title, sir Chris, invested in the academy, Solly for 4 years, apart from signing messi they did little wrong.
Eight. Stopping thr rot. CP. Promotion. The academy. Seems like they ran out of cash, but the baton has been passed so lets see how the next lot shape up.
Was the nike deal a plus? I appreciate my friends not being able to mock us got having Joma and Macron made kits RE the academy, I was told Paul hart's contract expires in the summer too. Need him as much as CP.
I guess it will depend on whether they continue to develop the academy. But I'm sure Paul hart won't be short of suitors, so would like him signed up ASAP.
7/10 Rescused us in our previous hour of need and allowed CP sufficient funds to get us out of League One, for this they will (as is reported) leave with my thanks and gratitude. Their investment in the academy should also not be underestimated, would we all be raving about Jordan Cousins and calling for the debut of Diego Poyet without this? Not backing CP since this summer (I would argue that he was backed throughout last season) and the clear lack of investment in the maintenance of the pitch will leave a bit of a sour taste. What I do not think many people, particularly on CL realise is that these two are not Charlton fans, they are businessmen.
3/10 Positives: They were not Richard Murray They got us promoted from League One The Club is still alive Negatives: They allegedly knocked Charlton folk for money They had an obvious disinterest in Charlton The threadbare squad they leave behind The pitch , which sort of sums up their lack of both care and investment Good riddance to bad rubbish, as my Nan used to say .
Everyone on here should read the comments from Angeldust on the takeover thread on ITTV. He has been spot on every time with his takeover news, and has some very worrying comments about our new Belgian mate.
Had a read. I mentioned in my original post that my dad was told that his source thinks it might be a short term thing - same time frame as TJ etc. we'll just wait and see I guess as no one knows for certain other than the man himself. Surprised angledust - for all his cult status - didn't know the deal was done despite a member on here sending a PM (hope they don't mind me saying) at around 5pm saying it was done. Reams makes an interesting post in that thread though
I agree with the various lists iof positives and negatives but my overall mark is lower than most. Yes these guys saved us and we will long remember that magical league 1 winning season but the failure to push on from that was so demoralising and we are, arguably, in a similar state today than we were when they took over. Add to than a lack of communication and a preparedness to let things die a lingering death and I'm struggling to give these guys much more than a 4. All of that said, they have been pouring their own (???) money into the club to prevent us going under so fair play. As to the alleged new owner, let's see. I don't read ITTV but I do read CL and Angel dust has got a few people worried. It's not going to be dull......
Global interest in football over the last ten years or so and the TV/Licencing money that has come into the game as a result has meant that many rich businessmen are looking to get involved and get a slice of the pie. As a result, the days of owners being fans, having an affinity with the club that they own are sadly fast becoming a thing of the past. As much as people try and fight it, football is as much a business as it is a sport these days. I am not allowing myself to get excited by this, nor am I writing the bloke off. We need a change in the ownership of the club but I will not be drawn on this guy until he has his feet under the table and has shown his hand.
Where would we be if they hadn't come in? We'd either have gone into administration or sold The Valley and moved to Kent, I can't envisage anything else. And no-one else was interested so the outlook was bleak, to put it mildly. It's not really surprising that it's difficult to attract new owners. The first thing they have to do is respond to the clamour from all sides to "invest"(spend) their money on buying players and paying inflated wages. If you look at the state of the country(or the world) there are a lot more worthy causes for any budding philanthropist. So I was pretty happy with their commitment to The Academy as the way forward, and as I've said I don't think CP really bought into this, otherwise we wouldn't have Sordell ahead of Smith and Pigott, or Gower at the club when we had Hughes already, and Cousins and Poyet coming through. Little things maybe, but when you're trying to run a club on a shoestring with a commitment to grass-roots football it all counts.
