The question I would ask is will the government be putting the additional funding into the NHS to pay for the increased staffing that this will require

Or will they be happy to increase waiting list time for clinic appointments & routine treatment or surgery that would be the consequence of allowing for senior drs to have days off during the week

Not forgetting that the 'waiting time' in hospitals is 'manipulated downwards' - by the slight nonsense of being seen by a triage nurse - thereby starting the 'treatment' process ( not counted as waiting to be seen ) - all the time you're being sent back into the waiting area for a doctor to be available to see to you.( sometime before Christmas ). If it's obvious you've got a broken leg why not send you to x- ray department prior to the fracture clinic - and if I have a gash to my arm I need it stitched - not bandaged and in both cases not sent back to the waiting area to hang around for 4 or 5 hours.

Because the government have set targets that are impossible to reach without further resources & if hospitals fail to reach them they are fined .... so have less funding to improve outcomes

Year on year NHS Trusts are having to make 1-2% savings but set higher & higher targets to meet ..... I know very few staff who don't do additional unpaid hours every week because they are trying to keep up with their work load & yet all we hear are people moaning about the NHS.

I sometimes think I would prefer to work in a third world country where people walk for several days to clinics then patiently wait in long queues to see a dr or nurse. Then express thanks for the care they receive. People in this country are spoilt by the service they receive & moan when they have to wait their turn

    Simply Posh
I should apologise for the moaning nature of my previous post. I have great admiration for our hard working medical staff in hospitals. I have had the privilege of being at close quarters with these 'saints' - and the dedication to their profession is inspiring. Queues are not their fault.

I totally agree with you about Government target figures - ridiculous compared with the funding & resources the NHS are being permitted - that is why the manipulation of numbers is a gimmick to provide propaganda for the politicians. NHS staff - especially in A&E do not want to allow the system to collapse just to highlight the nightmare conditions under which they are expected to perform miracles.

Whilst I appreciate the fact that we have a free NHS, the reality of the matter is that, because it's free, the Government can feel justified in not providing sufficient funding. On the other hand - I wonder just how how 'many' people would go to see a doctor because they have the sniffles or attend at A & E with split ends if they had to pay for the service. Perhaps we need to adapt the NHS so that we are compelled to pay more for the services when we need them. If I do not have a service contract for my boiler, if it breaks I have to pay the full price for repairs - maybe we should have a system for our NHS needs with some sort of insurance to pay the costs - or the consumer if no insurance exists.

Britain cannot continue to provide a free NHS for everybody & his European/worldwide dog !

You may remember me telling you about the episode with my mother's 3 vacuum cleaners ( post No.557)

Yesterday I visited my mum in Gillingham before catching the coach for Tranmere. She wanted me to give her a lift to a friends house before my departure - and prior to that to post a Christmas card for another of her friends,(Gloria).

Mum said the friend lived at either " No. 24 or 27, I'm not sure - it's something like that. " I knew that my parents used to live in the same road so I asked if Gloria's house was on the same side of the road. Mum said " Yes, the house is near the end of the road. " I told her therefore the number was an 'odd' one as we used to live at No.85.

I took mother to the road in question and stopped outside No.27. I pointed to the house and asked " Is that the right house? " She replied " What are you doing here ? I told you that Gloria's house is near the of the road." I said " Yes, and this is No.27 - near the end of the road - is this the right house ? She replied " No, I told you - it's at the end of the road." I said " We are at the end of the road with the low numbered houses. Are you suggesting that it's the other end of the road - with the high numbers ?" She replied " Yes, I told you." I said " But those houses have high numbers." Mum responded " Well I'm not sure of the number - but the house is at the end of the road."

So I duly drove to the other end of the road and stopped outside No. 127 ( with number 124 on the opposite side of the road ). I pointed to both houses and asked my mother "Which house is it." She replied " I'm not sure." I asked " Don't you recognise the front door?"
    She replied " No."

........... I had reached my end of the road.

and I don't care what you think about the 'black' economy. ( I'm NOT the one who may not be declaring the income )

Woke up this morning to the joys of a 'failed' boiler - Oh happy days - couldn't have happened at a worse time. Have you tried to get an engineer to attend on Christmas Eve ?

I did manage to at least make contact with a few. My initial question to each was to enquire of my chances of an attendance before THIS Christmas.
Each one seemed intent on telling me their complicated pricing structure. I suppose they wanted to ensure that I could & would be able to pay.
One engineer wanted details of my credit card over the phone " to ensure his attendance " ( do I really look THAT stupid ? ). British Gas told me they have a 3 tier price policy which dictates their attendance time - regardless of wether they have an available engineer. AND of course all the prices are astronomical. but

....then I get told that they can't come to me until next year !!! Why couldn't they disclose that fact when I first spoke ?

....then I remember a friend in the building trade - who has been able to put me onto another professional whenever I have needed.
A phone call to him - a call from him to a plumber - who telephones me - to tell me he can come to me within 30 minutes - as a favour to a mutual friend!
He arrives promptly, deals with the problem inside 10 minutes and very little money exchanges hands ( I gave him much more than he asked )
I can now have a hot shower. ( no smelly Christmas )

The title explains what happens when an emergency service vehicle is 'caught' by a speed camera.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-25527721

The report is slightly inaccurate because it purely blames the police for the nonsense - when in fact it is local authority cameras that 'catch' all vehicles. I have friends in the police who state that they too have to go through the same rigmarole as Ambulance personnel to have speeding tickets quashed.

    however

One day, as a coincidence, I was behind a fire engine travelling with blue lights & siren sounding. The journey wasn't particularly fast due to other traffic and the tight roads of the area. The route was about a mile long - and ended up with the fire vehicle pulling into the local fire station whereupon it switched off the blue lights & siren. I was intrigued by the situation and decided to stop and speak to one of the officers as they alighted from the vehicle.
Question. " What's the emergency for the blue lights & siren? "
    Answer. " Lunch. "

I have to feel sorry for the people of Yalding..completely flooded and without power over Christmas as per the Local and National news channels.

I know Yalding has always been a village with previous experience of floods but serious questions have to be asked of the government, local authorities and the energy companies. NO EXCUSES.

Where was the emergency measures and communication to get these people reconnected. Appalling, yes it was Christmas but regardless this was a crisis for the village...religious holiday period or not...was enough done to help them...me thinks not from what i;ve seen and heard.

I think that the situation is a 'follow on' of the lack of consultants in our hospitals at weekends - as recently discussed.
The energy companies ( quick to raise our prices by ridiculous figures year on year ), have openly said that any reconnection of power will be performed on a 'priority' basis. This must mean that they can't be bothered to call out sufficient engineers for repairs if only a handful of customers are affected - let them wait rather than paying overtime to get power restored.

I know I put up this post a few days ago - but I'm sure you'll agree that the title seems appropriate in this story

All he's done is supervise other staff 'handling' a couple of births over the last 20 years. What about recognition for all midwives & hospital staff - not forgetting that consultants don't work at weekends -( sorry, I couldn't help myself - it's a sort of disease )

This morning ( 0845 ), I was parked opposite a dental practise in town. I was waiting for a friend who had popped into a nearby shop. My rear wheels were just touching a yellow line ( due in part to the idiot parked next to me who had taken up 50% more room than necessary ) - so I waited in my car in case of any vulture with fixed penalty ticket.

On the dental practise side of the road there was a stretch of street parking places -but these were all occupied. Everywhere else there were double yellow lines for miles around.

I saw a car, the driver of which I recognised was a nurse of the dental practise. She slowed when alongside the parked cars - obviously hoping to find a space -- nothing doing. She drove away - but returned a few seconds later and replicated her manoeuvre in a quest for somewhere to park. She then drove away again. She repeated this process 6 or 7 times. The time gap between each circuit was less than 30 seconds - she certainly was an optimist - to think that a space would suddenly materialise.

Eventually she gave up and drove off down a side road ( also with much yellow lines - nearest parking space might have been about 100+ yards away )

I saw her walking back to the dental practise. She was within about 30 feet from the front door of the dentist when a car came out of the line of parked cars near to the surgery. ( sods law )

This caused the woman much consternation. She stopped - looked at the vacant space - turned as if to go back to her car - walked a few feet - stopped - turned back to head to her place of work - stopped - turned around again to head towards her car and broke into a trot.

She had been literally within touching distance of the dentists door - but decided to turn and complete a journey that I reckoned was a couple of hundred yards long in the hope that the space would remain vacant. She made me feel knackered just watching the effort she was putting in.

Thankfully for her she was rewarded for her 'perseverance / stupidity' - I really should have taken one more opportunity in 2013 to disenchant someone by moving my car into the vacant spot ( after all it wasn't my dentist )

edit - this is an oldie - but a goodie

thanks brb - just when my neighbour has been 'quiet' for a few days ( I've spared everyone her last two antics ) - you come along to try to wind me up.
.... remind everyone what you'll be doing on Friday, instead of going to watch a team that you allege to support.

Yesterday, as I drove to Gillingham, I was listening to the Pat Marsh show on Radio Kent, ( in case of any announcement of the game being postponed ).
Pat Marsh was speaking on the phone to a listener - on the subject of their 'First Love' ( not Gills apparently ! )

The listener went onto say he has been happily married to his 'first love' since 1961. Pat Marsh then asked the listener " How long have you been married ?"
    <doh>

...please don't tell me that it could (just) be 53 years - the question by Marsh was unnecessary given that the listener stated that he had been married since 1961.

    other people with numeracy problems

just been watching Blackburn v Man City on BT Sport ( FA Cup R3 ). The match was 1-1. With about 6 + minutes to go Man City went down to 10 men -
yet there were many people leaving the stadium !! OK there weren't any more goals - but
    1. Why would you leave very early under those circumstances - especially given the red card scenario ?........and
    2. Why then did you not bother to just stay at home/ pub & watch it on the box - then you could leave/switch off whenever you like ?

but then there were people leaving Priestfield stadium last night long before Jake took his corner.

For the benefit of those who rely on counting fingers & toes - a game of football can last longer than 90 minutes.

The 'sentence' is outrageous. There is absolutely no punishment. This idiot couldn't read a registration plate from 7 feet ( 2.1336 metres)

He had 'lost' his glasses a year ago - yet continued to play Russian roulette with other people's lives on a daily basis. It's a wonder disaster didn't happen sooner.

He has shown total contempt for the consequences of his crass stupidity - yet the biggest fool has to be the judge for setting the size of the punishment.
