Both years involved us getting promoted to the Premier League, and both years involved us embarrassing some of the big dogs, but which did you enjoy the most, and ultimately, which one will be regarded as the most important in Hull City's history? I don't know if it's nostalgia or just because it was our first time there but I think I enjoyed 2008 more. I think this team is better than 2008's and I think we'll do better this season, but it just doesn't seem as exciting as the first time around.
2013 for me for the obvious reason that I've actually been over watching the games, but also because I didn't follow the team in the first half of 08. Also I feel this season will be far more significant for our long term future than 2008 was, given what was to follow.
Interesting you should say that, as I think the opposite, I'm not sure all the events of this year would have taken place had it not been for 2008. Before that we were an anonymous Championship club around the level of a Bristol City or (at the time) Plymouth or someone, after that we became an (ex-Premier League) team and a fairly big name within the division. Despite the two years of regression under Pearson/Barmby. I doubt Steve Bruce would have come here had it not been for the PL stint.
Fair enough, I guess I think of 08 as contributing negatively to our future - with near liquidation - whereas I see 2013 contributing positively to our future - becoming an established PL side/pushing for Europe.
If only we were an "anonymous Championship club"!!! I think you have a better side now than you did then, and have more chance of staying up, and this time staying up
2008 was by far the bigger deal , we do have a better squad now in almost every area Long term , i'd also say 2008 as without that first promotion there wouldnt be the same hunger to return .
The first nine games of 2008 were very exciting as Brown's cavalier football took us to joint top of the table. People tend to remember the season by that brief period, but in reality the majority of it was a hard, tension-filled slog that we only survived by the skin of our teeth. 2013 has seen us quickly acclimatising to the division. We have improved and now we can offer anyone a game. Compared to the first 9 games of 2008, this year had no chance of being more exciting. However taking the full 19 games so far it has been more exciting because we can see there is long-term promise and we can be more optimistic about the future.
Take the first 9 games out of 2008 and the 'first time' element the rest was pretty ****e, followed by signing ****e players on exorbitant salaries it was across the two season a complete ****ing tragedy. No future built with the hugely increased revenue. 2013 we have a capable manager and back room staff (A slightly mental owner, but you can't have everything) We've signed some decent players with domestic international pedigree (Huddlestone, Livermore et al). Our home record has been to date exceptional with a first victory over Liverpool and a humping of Fulham, inflicting their worst PL defeat on them in their PL history. An undeserved 3-2 defeat to the current Premier League champions, their first goal should not have stood for 'Holding'. I just see a lot more to be pleased with in this current season. Plus at the end of the year, I look forward to be able to refer to Steve Bruce as our best manager ever. Here's to 2014.
2008 for me, it was the great adventure that most of us of more mature years thought we would never see.This squad is much better equipped to keep us in the top flight but as in much of life nothing beats the first time. I am loving this season but visiting grounds such as Old Trafford, Anfield, etc.for the first time supporting the lads was a dream come true.After we were relegated I honestly believed we get promoted again, think it's called "the triumph of hope over experience", we all have it to some degree that's why we support City.
Definately a better team now than 2008, though personally this season has been great, particulaly the wins over Liverpool and Fulham. However I wasn't at the games in 2008 as I was in Aberdeen, so it is going to feel better this time.
Very difficult to call as I agree with both sets of points. 2008 was pure euphoria and a landmark achievement, whereas this team is better with a more realistic chance of staying up longer. And yep, I think TWF is right in that 2013 might not have happened without 2008. I'm voting 2013 but that is personal reasons acting as the tie-breaker, (the last game I went to with my Dad was Cardiff on May 4th so that has left me with some of my greatest ever memories - I'm actually personally grateful to the team for succeeding on that day and leaving me with such emotional yet fond memories).
We are a much better team now, there's really no comparison. However the first top flight season was more enjoyable cos a) it was new and b) our owner at the time wasnt pissing on the entire history of our club from a great height.
er well no, he was just on the way to nearly bankrupting us ................................ I think they're both great, just different - it feels now that we've got the right to think of ourselves as a Premier League club, whereas even in those first few months I for one was waiting for the bubble to burst.
I'd rather be a bankrupt Hull City in Portsmouth's position than a billionaire Hull Tigers in the Premier League.
Living near to Portsmouth and with many of their fans as mates, would love to get into a debate re this BCC, but there are enough name change threads already!!
Wouldn't be much of a debate to be honest - that's just how I feel, I'm not saying anyone else should, and I won't be changing my mind on it.
This season doesn't have the same excitement as 2008, but as I saw every game that season bar two, the away days were better than the home games. The edge has definitely been taken away this season by our owner.
