Gus Poyet last night launched a raid on former club Brighton by making a £2.5million bid for Liam Bridcutt.

The Sunderland boss sees the midfielder as having Premier League potential and wants him in as soon as the transfer window opens.

Crystal Palace made a failed attempt to sign the 24-year-old last summer.

Poyet is also looking to sign QPR’s former England, Manchester City and Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.

The 32-year-old has not featured for Harry Redknapp’s Hoops since a 1-0 win at home to Charlton in mid November.

I hate him, but especially his stupid 'Shaun should be first on the plane to Brazil' dad ........... I'd bet Fletcher & Altidore would shake his hand though <ok>

I'd take them both. SWP on his day is a very tidy player. Not sure if he's past it though. Pace to burn, something we are lacking.

Does he still have the pace that made him a great player 5 or 6 years back?
    Doubt it

I dunno why, but I think SWP would be decent for us.

Weird thought, as I've never rated the little ****.

Bridcutt is an utterly pointless target.

What if it knocks Seb out of the starting 11?

Agree almost word for word on SWP. Just think he offers something different.

Know very little about Bridcutt other than Poyet seems extremely keen on him and since he worked with him for a few years that's good enough.

SWP is probably about as overrated as its possible to get. Gus knows what he wants though which may not be what we all want but imo, this would be an incredibly ****e signing.

I'm hoping that this Bridcutt is going to be a solid but not inspiring signing.

Never seen him play mind you but, if Gus who's managed him for years wants him that's good enough for me.

As for SWP, no from me.

    Wouldn't mind SWP provided it's a loan

Could do with some pace and he'd be an option, and if he's ****e which is likely he's not ours so who cares

And I'd much rather we signed an AM instead of Bridcutt. MUCH rather

Good man, I'll be staying around Covent on the Thursday to Saturday, then up to Shoreditch for Sunday to Tuesday.

    Absolutely this <ok>

I shudder to think of SWP as just another well paid passenger on our books. If he cannot get into a fizzypop side then what good is he to us? What I saw of him in a Man City shirt was garbage and top teams don't ship out their best players.

If Gus wants him, then I guess there must be a reason - so maybe he's cheap and no one else wants him. I sincerely hope this does not materialise.

not sure about SWP but if nothing else he should still have the pace to get at defenders which we don't have, but end product is a concern. I presume Gus knew him from the Chelsea days, so trust his judgement.

as for Bridcutt, i've been trying to find match highlights of him which is v limited, but of the stuff i've seen he can retain possession under pressure, put his foot on the ball, pick a pass, take on a man, tackle.....and seems like a very decent, intelligent lad (esp. for a footballer). if he can step-up, and i would guess he can.....bye bye Sebastian 'The windmill' Larsson. no brainer for me.
