Saturday is the past, it has been added to our history and therefore changed it. Just has Dean Windass changed our history when he scored at Wembley and we got promoted to the top flight for the first time.
Ignoring the attention seeking tit for a moment, which bit am I getting wrong here? As I understand it, there's no precedent for a name change like we're applying for? It's just wiki has a page with club status on, and there's a few with 'new name' next to them. Is it just a merger thing? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_football_clubs_in_England
Looks like most of the new names came from mergers. The others appear to be all non-league teams. The explanations could just be a change of ground in the previous season and therefore a new name. I think the precedent is that we are a Premier League team with a name going back over a hundred years. It would appear the FA are treating it as a change by inviting the CTWD to give evidence to it.
I know what you're saying but nothing changes history. Things just just add to it. When you talk about the history of anything you're talking about an archive of documented facts that can't be changed. You should stick to using "added to our history", it's more accurate.
That's true. The history of the human race was re-written when awkward bones were discovered that pre-dated Adam and Eve. However in this case no one is arguing that there's new proof that Raich Carter was actually a woman called Rachael. There's no dispute about our history, so it isn't being re-written. All that's happening now is the same thing that has always happened - it is being added to.
What was Hull City's highest top flight score before Saturday? Is it the same today as it was Friday? Has anything changed? I accept our results haven't changed but history isn't just a long list of fixtures otherwise Wembley 2008 would have the same historical importance as Hull City 0 Crystal Palace 1. Some games have more historical importance than others, which is why we had a thread about whether 6 second half goals without reply was a Premier League record.
You can't add another event today to the history of Yugoslavia. In the same way, if the name change goes through, the history of Hull City AFC stops. It would be Hull Tigers on the trophy. Hull City AFC would never, ever win the FA Cup, they'd never be knocked out of it either.
pedantic (comparative more pedantic, superlative most pedantic) Like a pedant, overly concerned with formal rules and trivial points of learning. Being showy of one’s knowledge, often in a boring manner. Being finicky or fastidious, especially with language.
From the moment you read the first word of this post your history has been added to. That doesn't mean your history has changed. It doesn't effect where and when you were born or how many sprouts you had with your Christmas dinner this year. All it does is add to the history you already have. What's happening at the club now is adding to our history, it isn't changing what previously happened.
Even considering the stiff competition on this forum, you are, without doubt, the dimmest ****er on here. Congratulations.
The history of Yugoslavia still exists, it hasn't disappeared in a strange 'Back To The Future' dissolving photograph. History will record that Hull City AFC's name was changed to Hull Tigers no more, no less. People change there names all the time. It doesn't mean their history ended at that point, it just means their history was added to.
The history exists, but Yugoslavia doesn't. If it changes, Hull City AFC will never win, draw or lose a game ever again. It can't, it wouldn't exist.
But history isn't just about how many sprouts you have, it also includes a comparison with previous years' Christmas dinners. Hull City's best ever performance in the FA Cup will change if we ever win it. Our history will have changed, just as addition in maths, with the exception of 0, changes the sum.
Tasmania was called Van Diemen's land. If you ask any historian if Tasmania and Van Dieman's Land are different places they will tell you they are the same except for the name change. You use Yugoslavia as a false comparison because that country was broken into separate countries. No one is suggesting the club will be split into separate clubs. Allam's plan is to re-name it.
“History is written by the victors.” ― Winston Churchill He didn't give into dictatorial bullies either ...
And if you change your name during the course of this year will you no longer be able to compare the number of sprouts you have in 2014 to those you had in 2013?
