8 of those European trophies were before the Premier League rebranding.

I was obviously referring to more recent success.

    Leeds too.

The precedent for big spending was really set by Man U and Blackburn when the Premiership bubble started to form. Other clubs have kept the wheels in motion since then admittedly.

Hardly any world transfer record breaking deals have been done in the Premiership.

Take a breath pal. We had some class players in 2008, as illustrated by the 10 Englishmen playing in the biggest club game in world football. Our manager was awful though. As for English/Scottish coaches who've won the European Cup, England - 4 (Clough, Paisley, ***an, Barton), Scotland - 2 (Stein, Ferguson)

Man United have never spent unsustainably though. Our revenue has always been more than enough to cover purchases and wages.

    Interesting page. <ok>

To clarify then, the precedent for big spending in England was set by the clubs I mentioned. Man U especially broke quite a few English transfer records in the early 90s. I take it Italy had some kind of Sky-style TV deal pumping money into their game before the English from those figures?

But it wasn't unsustainable, which is apparently why English clubs have been successful in Europe...

How can you possibly know it's sustainable?

Yes, but how can you possibly know something is sustainable? Can you tell the future?

Well, Man Utd are spending a lot less on transfer fees these days which would suggest that the big spending was unsustainable.

Have you heard of the Glazer family? It's more to do with them wasting roughly £45m a year on interest payments, which is 2 very big signings when you think about it.

Or that they are now saddled with debt thanks to a leveraged buyout and around £200 million in Payment In Kind notes.

I suspect Manchester United will ride out any future footballing financial crisis without too much trouble.

It's the rest of the other clubs trying to compete without similar revenue streams that could be ****ed.
