As for ther Suarez thing, there was real disagreement amongst fans about whether we should even go for him, let alone whether that was too much money. Cavani and Falcao went for not much more and both where considered better players. Whether you'd like to admit it or not all the comments your making now ARE with hindsight and no-one can know how things would have turned out had we got him. The £40m+1 bid was not laughable as it was clearly made on information that lead us to believe that would be enough to get the transfer done. Again with hindsight that was a mistake as the clause wasn't what we thought. But at the time it was a perfectly viable bidfor a player and tbh it was in the right sort of range of figures considering other transfers that had happened for similar players. Oh and using either Bale or Carroll as your evidence for why a player should sell for X amount is stupid in more ways thani care to explain. Complete and utter stupidity.
haha embarrassing post, you always know you have won an argument when the other person resorts to insults, thanks mate.
Firstly the whole £40m +£1 bid was the most embarrassing any top club could make. Not only did it serve to piss Liverpool off, but it also proved that we weren't serious enough. Anybody sensible would have bid around the early £40m mark like £41m-£43m, but no, some smart ass decided to stick in a +£1 bid, which effectively killed off any further negotiations. Secondly, we really were poor in the summer transfer window until we fluked the Ozil transfer. Sometimes everything fortunately clicks into place, and the Ozil deal was just that. I think even Wenger was as surprised as us when we signed Ozil. Lastly, Giroud is not good enough to be our main CF. You can jazz him up as much as you want but he isn't the player that'll take us forward.
So many opinions masquerading as facts. '10 goals in less than half a season'? He's played 26 games. You're of the opinion Giroud will play at least 27 more games this season with only 20 prem games left and Bayern in the CL?? 'Very obviously adds a lot as a CF'? Depends on your criteria of a 'lot'. 'Most definitely a top 4 striker'? Isn't that the issue... He's good enough to get top 4 but no more??
First sentence: Ok fair play, so we are basically at the halfway point 20 PL games, 2 CL ties minimum and at least 1 FA Cup game, so 23 games unless we get past Tottenham (in which case it could be an extra handful of games) or Bayern (in which case an additional 2 games minimum). So my in less than half a season, should read as, in half a season. Don't see that it makes much difference to my point though Second sentence: I suppose so, but he does a LOT more than a lot of other strikers, so although you could set very high criteria to try and belittle him as a player, in general i think most people agree he adds a lot as a CF (outside of goals). His hold up play, aeriel presence, defensive headers, bringing others into play etc.. Third sentence: Yes that is the issue. He is a top 4 striker, but not the world class player we want to lead us to a title. The reason i put this comment in is because earlier in the thread some are trying to claim he isn't even a top 4 striker.
Sorry but your talking a big pile of steamy ****. Why if we had information that lead us to believe 40m +1 was enough to get the deal done would we just for fun give them another 3million quid? Total nonsense. Football is a business, you dont just give away money for the sake of it. And he wasn't suprised we signed Ozil, he was saying in the last week or so of the transfer window that he expected the fans to be pleasently surpised with who he managed to get in. And up until that point we had signed Flamini on a free (fantastic business) signed our key players to long contracts adn got rid of all the deadwood. It was a very active and successful transfer window. The only issue anyone can realistically take with the club is not getting a striker in, but even then we made moves for multiple strikers...
How was it a piss take? The club wouldn't have had any choice in the matter if the release clause turned out to be accurate. Who cares if we took the piss by offering just one pound over ... it doesn't matter when they can't reject it.
Well, he ended his drought today with a crucial winner and as always worked hard. I got no real problems with Giroud and many ways I admire him for making full use of his skill set, by working hard and never giving up.
I'm hoping that this will give his confidence a boost and he'll find his scoring touch again. He's not a World class striker by any imagination, but despite the rancor against him, he still works hard and offers the team a lot more than simply being there to score goals.
Insults ? If you think that qualifies as an insult , you should get out more. I try to never enter a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent . Its not fair ....mate
there IS no point . Football IS a business and it is PEOPLE doing that business. a POUND insults them ..he dont get it . he thinks decisions are made by computers and not humans .
Yes he scored today, his first goal in 9 games. And watch the goal again because Im not sure he would have touched it without the push he got in the back. I expect goals from a CF and some help defensively but Giroud is no threat at all up front. 1 goal in 9 is just not good enough.
For me, I thought it significant how we couldn't easily break out once he went off. He is absolutely crucial to our possession. Saying he is "no threat at all up front" is hyperbole though - particularly when he scored the only goal of the game. Did he not just prove (by scoring) that he was the greatest threat on either team? This is why I don't understand his detractors, the criticisms just defy all logic.
You seem to have this opinion that Giroud is the only striker in the planet that offers something OTHER than scoring and that all these other class strikers ONLY score goals and therefore wouldn't be as useful to us. Barca and Real don't rely on a big man up top to win knock downs and set up chances for the other attackers. They dont do too badly with less physical but more productive forwards who actually stick the ball in the back of the net. You can go on and on about what he 'offers' other than scoring but he clearly offers less than a real top class forward does.
Yes siry. It's basically just trying to find excuses for Giroud....Yeah, the guy's scoring rate is not good, and is nowhere near the quality demanded for a club like Arsenal, but hey he works hard. If anyone thinks that snatching up a world class striker that can bang in 30+ goals is not a better all round alternative than Giroud because he 'works hard" or that Giroud is a better option than what other clubs have in top world class strikers because he "works hard" then ummm yeah ok.
Not clearly at all. This point has been done to death and I have posted enough about it already. If you don't see the work he puts in for the team, then I can't make you see it.
The debate isn't whether he does or doesn't do other 'work' for the team... I agree that he does. It's that that's not enough to warrant being good enough to be the number 1 forward at our club.
This pretty much sums it up. Giroud does offer something, but is nowhere near the quality I expect at Arsenal. There are a lot of players who do as much as him defensively and still offer more of a goal threat. The one who comes to mind as a better for the team defender whilst being a world class goal scorer is Drogba. I don't expect to get someone like him but there are others with similar qualities to a lesser extent out there and I fully expect the Arsenal scouting network to be good enough to find them.
