Sunderland will make an early January transfer swoop in the perpetual hunt for a left back, with Fiorentina's Marcos Alonso due to arrive on an initial loan.

The former Real Madrid youngster only joined the Florence club last summer after a spell in England with Bolton Wanderers, but has struggled to secure a first team berth with the high-flying Violas, who currently sit fourth in Serie A.

The reports come from Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, so can be accepted as being highly reliable.

A new deal for @SAFCofficial: marcos ‪#‎alonso‬ (former Bolton) on loan from @ACF_Fiorentina. He's already in England.

It's a problem area for us and he's fitter and better than Dossena in my opinion ........... I saw him play against us for Bolton and was impressed with his work rate and positioning.

Will Dossena leave if this lad arrives, I'd expect so. We have Colback and Bardsley if needs must.

Dossena mustbe out the door. nowhere near fit enough or good enough.

this is a great signing if we get him. i know it ain't the am/striker we're looking for, but if we can play as an overlapping full back this will improve the number of chances we create....good start.

Also begs the question about Celutska's position which I think he's earned.

I can't see Poyet dropping him for Bardsley which makes me wonder if Barsdley will be going in January ............. it would free up a wage and he has to be worth £1 million with his experience.

Failing that we could keep him until the end of the season in case we have another crop of suspensions.

if this kid can hit the ground running, and with Celutska performing it could be bye bye Bardsley.

not sure if we can afford to let him go, though. as we have a **** load of games coming up and we'll need cover across the pitch. i won't lose any sleep if we do sell him though....along with Gards, Larsson, Ji. that would free up 100k a week

    position that needs attention.

What are the British media doing ffs? If this is at an advanced stage we have the italian press to thank yet again for bringing reliable information. Our lot are nowhere as per. Probably because they're too busy making **** up.

Links to most of our summer signing originated from the italian press by the way.

As long as we don't leave ourselves thin for the rest of the season I'd be happy to see a few go.

January is a huge month for us with seven games, five of which are at home.

Alonso would bring it up to two for each fullback position, We'd need another right back before I'd contemplate letting Bardo go like.

Sunderland are hopeful of wrapping up a deal for Spanish left-back Marcos Alonso.

Reports in Italy today indicated that Fiorentina defender Alonso was on the verge of joining Sunderland on loan until the end of the season and is due to undergo a medical at the Stadium of Light.

And the Echo understands, Sunderland ARE ready to make the 22-year-old Gus Poyet’s first signing as Black Cats boss when the January transfer window opens next Wednesday.

Signing a new left-back has been one of Poyet’s main priorities in the market, with Andrea Dossena the only specialist available in the squad, albeit right-back Phil Bardsley has impressed there over recent games.

And last week, Sunderland were given the go-ahead from Fiorentina to sign Alonso, who crucially boasts experience of English football - an attribute Poyet has identified as pivotal to new arrivals.

Former Real Madrid trainee Alonso made 46 appearances for Bolton – nine of which were in the Premier League – before joining Fiorentina on a three-year deal during the summer.

But he has featured just three times in Serie A this season and the Italians have been happy for Sunderland to cover his wages.

Sunderland are also thought to be keen on making a couple of extra additions before the window slams shut.

Brighton midfielder Liam Bridcutt, who played under Poyet at the Amex Stadium, continues to be linked with a move to Wearside, while Sunderland are also thought to be investigating potential striking options.

So basically, you've beat them to it without being paid a penny.

Didnt realise he was only 22! if he turns out to be decent and a relatively low buyout fee is agreed then its win/win for us really

tbh the likes of Sky Sports/BBC get all there info from twitter now, nothing faster than it

Whilst there is a load of bullshit wrote on it there is also a lot of shocks and breaking news!
