I think Ings was with Shaw today, judging by their twitter feeds. It is an understandable and credible link, but also possibly quite a lazy one to make.

This the most credible thought. Right in the mix to go up and sell the best striker? Can't see that.

I agree, unless Danny Ings is also good in goal or at CB, we don't really need him this season.

I agree with this. I haven't seen too much of ings, other than TV highlights, so I wouldn't pass any judgment on whether I think he's right for us.

After last January's high hopes followed by damp despair....I'm not going to get too excited by this window.

Carlos Vela being linked today...can't see it myself.

It will test Cortese more then last Jan transfer window. Does he want to keep the squad we have and stay 8th - 10th or spend a bit of cash and maybe get into europe.

Pochettino on Luke Shaw:

"The player is just not for sale. He wants to stay, the club is not willing to sell, so there is no Luke Shaw case."

Think we have to trust Nicola on this...he spent big in the summer and bought well. Lovren is fantastic, Wanyama may not look fancy but he is very effective, and Dani is a top striker who I am confident will come good. If we were facing relegation, Cortese would be under pressure to spend because of the cost of relegation. Only he knows how much money is available...he may want to keep his powder dry for summer targets. He and Mauricio may decide they need to spend now or they may have decided that we will be okay when players return to fitness. We'd all spend, but then we don't have to manage the money available.

I have decided that we need a new left back in January, if Shaw is going to continue missing so many games. If he can cover centre back and in goal as well, that would be great.

Sums it up Beef. He's so driven I'd be surprised if it's not Europe.

But will he go for it this season or take time to get it right in the summer and go for it in 2014/15?

Yeah I'd like any January signings to be able to cover more than one position well. Defender should be someone like Bassong, but probably not Bassong.

Actually maybe just get Bassong. I don't have many bad things to say about him.

That article is an article on us being linked with a player, but then proceeds to say why he's unlikely to leave his current club. <doh>

Southampton are considering a January swoop for ex-Arsenal attacker Carlos Vela, according to reports from The Sun.
The Mexican international currently plies his trade with Real Sociedad, and has been a key player for the Spanish side since leaving the Emirates Stadium in 2012.
The 24-year-old played a mayor role in his side’s shock Champions League qualification-winning campaign last season, and has continued to hold a prominent role within their starting XI this term.
His fine displays have alerted Saints chief Mauricio Pochettino, who is keen to bolster his attacking options this winter.
The Argentine has seen his side make an excellent start to the season, and is looking to keep them in the battle for a top four finish by making some top quality additions to his squad.
Vela is seen as the ideal man to slot into their fluid attacking set-up, with his experience of English football also attractive to the south coast outfit.
Although he is a valued member of Real Sociedad’s set-up, the Basque side may be willing to cash in after dropping out of European competition following their dismal fourth place finish in the Champions League group stage.

Editor - "still got a half page to fill lads, what you got for me?"

Journo - "Well there's a spurious looking story online that Southampton could be interested in Carlos Vela. No real legs to it, and no credible source though boss."

Editor - "Sod it, that'll do, we're due for print in half an hour."
