Apparently true, according to Radio 4. Just been discussed by Mimi (its all about me!) Humphreys and an excellent muslim spokeswoman, who took the wind out of his sails by saying its ridiculous, there is no religious law against selling pork, just eating it, nothing in the shop is Halal anyway, and if you don't like selling alcohol, don't work in a shop selling alcohol. Cheered me up.

I wasn't aware M&S sold pork, to me they are just a great place to buy my bras. I have noticed recently that they stopped selling ***s as I left empty handed last time i was in there. I was asked if "i wanted anything else?" after I paid for a nice pink plush push upper ... I said "Yep 20 Red Winstons" and to my amazement they had none ... This shop has gone to pot.

With great respect....What M & S are saying is that they will try to give staff whose religious beliefs forbid them from carrying out certain tasks, other positions in their stores (Bakery, Clothing etc).
If someone had f***ed up, and put the server on the counter, it really wouldn't be a problem (To me anyway) to just use another till, as it seems the customer was politely asked to do.

Then again....It wouldn't give The Mail an 'moral outrage' story', if it didn't spice it all up a little.

If my corner shop, the outstanding, open all hours Kangs, adopted the same policy they'd go out of business pretty quickly, given that it, like thousands of others, is owned and entirely staffed by Muslims. Its brilliant, always have what you need at a good price (especially compared to the odious Spar, its nearest competition), very good wine selection and, last year, an emergency last minute 8 foot real Christmas tree. All this in a space about the size of my living room.

Fair enough to Marks and Sparks (of course a 50% Jewish company from the outset, with no scruples about selling pork or setting up a shop in Kabul in the sixties) they have the number of staff to switch people round (though beyond working the till, stock taking and shelf filling, all of which would include exposure to alcohol and pork I'm struggling to see what roles there are for this level of shop worker). I hope there is no general expectation to extend anything like this to smaller businesses. Thankfully there of plenty of religious people who recognise that these archaic taboos should not get in the way of earning a living. For those who really can't bear the possibility of contact, surely they have excluded themselves from work in this environment, they shouldn't apply in the first place.

Perhaps we should extend the same courtesy to Jewish staff (pork), Hindu staff (beef), Mormons (alcoholic beverages, tobacco, coffee, tea, and other addictive substances), Hare Krishnas (meat, fish, eggs and alcohol) and so on. Then you could queue at Till A for some of your groceries, Till B for the next part, Till C for the next and so forth. What fun that would be, eh?

Woe betide a Christian member of staff if they conscientiously object to selling halal or kosher meat, though, as this is no doubt a 'lawful' way to extinguish the life of the animal.

As a matter of interest, do Muslims ensure that the animal was extinguished in a 'lawful' way prior to some of its properties being used in the cosmetics industry, or its hide being turned into leather goods?

The other thing that baffles me is how Muslims can, on the one hand, be opposed to the consumption of alcohol because of its intoxicating properties and yet grow opium poppies in Afghanistan. Can anybody explain this for me, please? I understand that the two Muslim men just convicted for the murder of Lee Rigby were regular users of cannabis too; how does this fit in with their devout and extremist beliefs? I'm genuinely confused. Its almost as though they make up the rules as they go along, which cannot be true surely?

A remarkably selective religious perspective. Firstly there is nothing against handling alcohol in the Khoran, but only against its consumption - Moslems are allowed also to consume alcohol for medicinal purposes. Secondly because a fundamental religious belief would prevent someone from working for an organisation which was involved in anti-religious activity - no matter which role they were asked to play in that organisation. Would an abattoir find work suitable for a Buddhist ? Or would a true Buddhist work in any capacity for an abattoir ? There will always be jobs which are, in a sense, closed to certain religious groups. Can a Quaker go into the army and keep his values ? Can a Christian or a Moslem work as a banker, when both religions forbid usury ? Can a Catholic or a Quaker go into parliament and take an oath to the Queen as upholder of the faith in England ? I could go on and on here.

Even I don't assume that all Christians are virulent homophobes, or are ignorant enough to confuse homosexuality with transvestism, but they don't help themselves, do they?

Its not so much they don't help themselves Stan, its more that they can't. Their whole philosophy is based on contradiction and inconsistency.

I thought this radio "game" was great listening. The clampit of a host made up all sorts of questions and laid out traps thinking he'd ambush Hitchens and catch him off-guard. But in the end he got totally Hitch-slapped:
