Sherwood has both the UEFA "A" badge and the "B" badge. He does not have the full UEFA Pro Licence which follows the A and B badges.

did he automatically qualify for a certain "level" of coaching badge because he's been a professional footballer?

Yes, he would be exempt from level 1 which is part of the UEFA B licence.

Which ones are needed to be a premier league manager? Am i right in thinking you need some sort of badge to be a permanent prem manager? I assumed Sherwood meets the criteria and the pro licence isn't required?
If so, what is the pro licence for?

The pro licence is required. If you remember, when Southgate became a manager, there was a bit of a fuss as to whether he should be allowed as he didn't have the UEFA full Pro Licence.

It then transpired that this ruling kicks in for all "permanent managers". Definition of permanent is longer than 12 weeks, so Sherwood would need to commence his Pro Licence within the next 11 weeks to be allowed to be our longer term manager.

That is according to the rule book, but this is a rule that has been relaxed in he past, Shearer at Newcastle for instance.

    Thanks Spurcat.

So he just has to start it? Rather than actually complete/pass/whatever it? Seems a bit dumb, but then its the FA/UEFA so i can't say i'm surprised.

Er no, Brian Clough was a management great and Tim Sherwood has been in charge for two games.

Sherwood is an ego-maniac who has convinced himself that he's some sort of genius... losing at home to West Ham suggests otherwise.

without starting a whole new discussion, english football and the players we produce might be slightly different if the cost of coaching courses were cheaper for "Joe Bloggs".

We're talking about Sherwood just "going and doing his badge" like it's nothing. It ****s me off how easy it all is for people in the industry, yet for others with a burning passion for football who don't have an affiliation with a club it's daylight robbery.

How much Roo? I have a similar feeling about the WPBSA (snooker) coaching qualifications. Last i checked the timings of such courses also meant you couldn't do them in the evenings or weekends, you had to have a big bunch of weeks with nothing else to do.

It's not just a financial cost Roo, it is also a huge time commitment. The Pro Licence takes a year to complete and involves a minimum of 240 hours coaching. Not sure how many outside of the game can afford both.

I'm about to take my level 2, but i've completed my level 1 (which is an absolute piece of piss).

Anyone who wants to coach children has to go on the Level 1 course. Dads cannot just take their kids football team like the old days.

The level 1 varies (in my area) from £110-£160.

This course runs over a 2 week period, where you're expected to give up 2 full days on 2 consecutive weekends, + 3 evenings each week to do first aid, safeguarding etc.
I had to travel 25 miles each way to do this, 10 times. so a total of 500 miles on top of the course cost.
The reason i had to travel 25 miles each way? because the FA don't put courses on regularly enough or in enough locations.

    The level 2 was £370.
I will be travelling the same distance to do this one, except its 1 full week (in one of my holidays). Then i have to go to random day and evening classes to complete extra bits and hand in work, + 12 hours (I think) of session plans/coaching with a team.

Last month, I also completed part 1 (of 3) of the FA youth award, which is specialises in enhancing football for 5-11 year olds.
cost - £130 - luckily this was round the corner from my house and cost me very little. However, it was a 4 day weekend course, which meant i had to have friday and monday off of work.

As you can see, that's £600+ quid (before petrol) I've had to find.

I would love to be a coach full time. It's so rewarding and I'm very passionate about it. But the setup for the general public is terrible.

You're required to fund it yourself and give up your holidays/weekends. I wouldn't actually mind having to pay something for the course as it's no different to going out and buying a playstation game. It's something I want to do/have, so i should pay. But the prices are unacceptable and we all wonder why England are so ****?

It starts at grassroots football with people like myself who do it for the love of the game, yet we're the ones who get completely neglected.

anyway, rant over. Sorry HIAG for going off on a tangent. <ok>

Your post laughing at Ardiles assessment mainly.

A few other prominent figures have spoke about him too, ok, I agree comparisons to other players 'the next Messi' are laughable and unecessary, but typical of todays reporters, but the general consensus is that he has all the ingredients to be a match winner. We haven't seen much to suggest that yet, glimpses here and there, but he shouldn't be written off as some are starting to.

Good luck with it, Roo. If Avram Grant can manage at the highest level then you should have no problems.

Yes, I know. That's why this thread is so obviously a joke thread.

FFS! Dense, humourless people should not be permitted to post on this site. Mind you, that would decimate the Chav board.

The ironic thing is that this poster calls himself "Joker." Is the joke that you couldn't spot a joke if one came along and pissed up your leg?

May I chime in with a word?
I think all this badge crap is just something to keep the FA (or whoever) blokes employed.
If you have been a footballer to start with you should be off and running. This means you have a first hand knowledge of what to do with a ball straight away. The thing is to install this knowledge on the players until they know that this is a team game and you can pass the ball to another player who is wearing the same shirt as you!
Luck has a lot to do with being a manager.Take the Liverpool manager as an example. If you are fortunate to have a goalscorer like Sewerage you have to be laying back laughing at the rest of the clubs.Without him,Liverpool are very mid table.
To be able to kick a players butt when they are not performing is also helpful, but, today, there are no starving footballers and if you upset them,as per Berbatov,he will try to screw you up until he gets his way.
Being a former "great player" does not get you tons of trophies.Note the revolving managers door!
Quite often it may be the ordinary player who produces the goods (with the help of the special goalscorers,of course!.
So,maybe, there could be a permanent place for Tim Sherwood at The Lane.........at least, the bloody teams now going forwards instead of sideways!!!!!!

I genuinely think Sherwood could be the next Clough, because Clough managed Nottingam Forest, which is like Sherwood Forest, which makes them the same. The illuminatii don't **** about guys.
