Did QPR owner back the wrong horse when he let McClaren leave for Derby?

Did QPR owner back the wrong horse when he let McClaren leave for Derby?

Tony Fernandes must be sweating a little after yesterday's results. Surely QPR have to win promotion this season or fall foul of the FFP rules. And whilst 'Arry's boys stumbled to a home defeat against Leicester, McClaren's Derby kept up their amazing charge.

So how much of QPR's revival at the start of the season was down to the Wally with the Brolly? The former England man is a figure of ridicule amongst fans, but the QPR players credited him for rebuilding belief on the training field, and he has had an amazing impact at Derby since replacing Nigel Clough.

And meanwhile QPR under Redknapp are stuttering. Given the money spent and the wage bill, QPR should be storming the division, but with yesterday's defeat they have now only taken 11 points from the last 7 games, and over a 46 game season that works out at 72 points, which only just qualifies you for the playoffs; and if you average out on the basis of the last 11 games, the figure reduces to 66 which amounts to 8th or 9th place! And the next two games have the potential for further slip ups, away to Nottingham Forest and Zolaless Watford.

Of course, QPR have a cushion thanks to the results achieved when McClaren was still at the club, but that buffer has been chipped away over the last 6 weeks and many more slips up could spell big trouble.

Leicester are level on points with 'Arry's boys now and Derby are only two points behind with a superior goal difference. With Dyche's Burnley refusing to drop away, it looks like any two from 4 at the moment - and after all the money Fernandes has invested, that really isn't good enough.

I'm with you, the squad we got we should really be walking this league this ant arrogance all my mate's that are not qpr fans think the same. I know we are rebuilding from the shambles of last season but look what Newcastle did when they went down. Something is not right with the team, still ant got out of first gear. Sorry to be negative just frustrated at the moment.

Oh dear, here we go. What amazes me is the amount of people that say we have this amazing squad of players and a premiership team....really??. It's fab that we are where we are,but from what I've see so far we have a few quality players(that come and go a bit) and the rest are quite average. I think we have been a bit fortunate with a lot of our games and we need a few quality players in the right areas to really make a charge. I really think we will drop down the table unless we start scoring some goals. Didnt we get 12 goals in our first 3 games the year we went up?. Time to step up

Nobody's saying we have a premiership team, far from it. Everybody's saying we have a much stronger squad than anyone else in the Championship, because its true.

Not entirely sure that's true there's Wigan, Blackburn etc who've got strong squad's on paper & other teams with strong first eleven.

If you put a top Championship team together how many of our squad would be in there?

Could argue a case for Green, BAE, Barton & Austin but probably no one else apart from maybe Ned fit & played more games.

Must be Sue Denim, or at least a total WUMMER.
When SM came in we were already winning regularly and we continued to win after he left. "QPR are (sic) stuttering" made me laugh.

We've definitely got a strong squad but has it's weakness & not one that's going to walk the league which people have been saying as nice as that would be. History (apart from Newcastle in 09/10) has shown that it's a tough league to get out of & don't see this year will be any different.

I don't really know about the impact he had at QPR but I do feel that we are stuttering a bit and have been since the start of the season. I still think that Harry has done an ok job but hasn't done a great job. We are not firing on all cylinders. He has failed, so far, to make us a real attacking threat, which is what he is supposed to be good at. There's no fluency up front. And we lack the concentration when it counts, at times. We pass around nicely in the middle or at the back but as soon as we move forwards we totally stutter and make silly mistakes or players misunderstand each other. I wonder what it is they actually do in training?
Anyway, I still think we're contenders for the top two spots but it's definitely not a given at this time.

I agree completely. It's not about how good the players are on paper and in skill. It's about the unit working like a Rolls Royce engine. That's what we had in our recent promotion season. And it's the reason why lesser teams can beat "better" teams on a good day. We have a very good set of players on paper and if we were working like a really good unit, we would be storming this league. Alas, we are not because we are not working like such a good unit. Something is wrong and the balance is off. Harry is taking his time in flattening it out so far. I'm not saying his job is easy after the disease that we've had over the last two seasons but time is ticking.

To doubtless gasps of astonishment I'd disagree with the stupid article anyway. Harold is a manager, McLaren is a coach, his style and impact is very short term as a manager. He inherited a good team at Derby (as he himself has said) and got them playing. They may go up, but they won't stay there.

Derby's results since losing to us -

    Sheff Wed (h) 3-0
    Bournemouth (a) 1-0
    Wigan (a) 3-1
    Boro (h) 2-1
    Blackpool (h) 5-1
    Charlton (a) 2-0
    Donny (h) 3-1

Not the most difficult fixtures save Wigan, and Blackpool only had 9 players in 2nd half after leading 1-0 at HT.

Their next 3 games are Huddersfield (a), Barnsley (a) and Wigan (h) so with their current form you can see them getting at least 7 if not 9 points, so may find themselves top going into the new year.....
