If anyone wants a good curry out of town - Asham in Newport is one of the best I have tried, excellent. - include the usual suspects in Mumtaz, Jinaah, Shimla Pinks and Akbars. A top curry - honestly, plus they do sit in or take away.

I urge any chilli maniac to get a selection of sauces and other products from here.

Living proof that extreme heat and intense flavour do not have to be mutually exclusive. Although they also do an excellent selection of milder stuff.

best/worst I had was a home made duck curry from the Curry Bible. it was supposed to be the hottest. only I misread the recipe and used tablespoons instead of teaspoons on the chili powder. it was bloody lovely.

Indian cuisine is very varied and nothing like what you get in most restaurants in the UK. vindaloo in india is a variation on Portuguese pork with garlic and vinegar. still hot but very different.

it is the one curry me wife can make better than the curry houses of Hull - for sure !

I love a simple Garlic chilli chicken dish too , a jaipuri and a Balti - britains best take-away dish

Her indoors went to The Madras curry house on the corner of Bean Street with work the other night.

Said it was the best curry she'd ever troughed, she brought me her leftovers in a doggy bag and I must say it was lovely.

I like a chicken tikka Madras or a chicken tikka Vindaloo but only when at home. If it's too hot I look a right berk and start hiccuping uncontrollably.

When out I'll go for something middle of the road like a bhuna.

Hiccups are indeed the curse of a curry. Oh yeah and of course an arse like a Japanese flag.

Is this a joke? It's not curry, it's brown swill on a plate

I’ve eaten curries all over England, in many establishments with excellent rep.

However, the curry I had at The Madras, a couple of months back, was the best I’ve ever had.

I've reviewed curries all across the UK and Hull, I'm afraid, is traditionally very poor. I'm interested to hear if this is a strong venue and I'd be happy to give it a whirl.

Me and my mate Bob went to one of the battle cruisers in Brandesburton a few years ago after playing golf for some nose bag.

When both ordered curry and the landlord asked how hot we wanted them.

'As hot as you can manage John' came Bobs reply. The landlord wasn't called John.

'Are you sure boys? It'll be pretty violent if you want is hot as chef can go'.

The warning was loud and clear but instead of taking heed what did soft lad( Bob, not me) say?

' Oh really? I think you'll find I'll be the judge of that'.

Two mouthfuls and it was game over. The landlord and chef watching us from behind the bar and I dare say pissed themselves when we trundled out, defeated.

We looked a proper pair of bell ends.

    Agreed.

But I’ll definitely go back to The Madras and I don’t think I’ve said that before about a curry house in Hull

These chefs must love it when a real knobhead walks in and asks for the hottest thing they've got, then orders a side of chillies and an extra bowl of sauce.

Had that. Don't know how much it differs from plant to plant, but I've had hotter.

Just re-read that and it sounds a bit 'blackest cat'.

It was more meant as a question/observation that sometimes chillis from the same plant are different heats. I'm told the ones actually grown in hot places are hotter too.

I've found that once you hit the sort of nuclear levels, the main difference between them is how long it takes to get the burning sensation to die down. I've found shovelling bars of chocolate down my neck is a reasonable way of quelling them.

I've seen various methods suggested for this Dutch, ranging from milk to sugar. They always looked temp fixes though.

In my experience, Yoghurt and chocolate work better than milk. I imagine ice-cream would be up there somewhere too. At least with the ice-cream, it could give a clue as to when the chili's past all the way through the system.
