Charlton manager Chris Powell says the lack of new deals for players and staff who are out of contract next summer is causing "uncertainty" at the club. Powell's own contract also expires at the end of the season. Continue reading the main story â"Hopefully we'll be in a position to give them the rewards I feel they deserve.â Chris Powell "There's an uncertainty there. I'd like the players and squad to be sorted, and my staff. "Being manager and leader of the football club, I would like them to be happy before I look at myself," he told BBC London 94.9. "I just have to play it day by day and see where it takes us but I'm not in a position to effect that at this present time. Despite his concerns, Powell is not worried performances will suffer. "It hasn't affected their work," he added. "They've been giving their all, as always, for me, each other and for this football club. "It would be nice for me to be in a position to get that done. When that times comes no doubt I'll be doing my best to persuade those boys to commit themselves to this club." Skipper Johnnie Jackson is among those hoping to be offered new terms after arriving at The Valley in 2010. "Johnnie, being captain, is keen to continue his career at this club but there's a number of others who want to do the same," Powell said. "In January, they've got six months left and that's not a good position for us to be in because they're assets to this club. "They're assets from a business point of view but the first port of call for me is the football - and they're good players. "I suppose all they can do is play well, show everyone that they're ready to give their all in every game and then hopefully we'll be in a position to give them the rewards I feel they deserve."
Confusing, I think. Harry Lennon has just been given a deal until 2016, yet no talks with the first-team squad, except Solly. So it appears that Chris Powell is not in charge of who is being offered a contract. Constructive dismissal?
Powell's constant milking of the fan's sentimentality is becoming irritating. Most of the players don't deserve a new contract, and neither do CP and his coaching staff. Stop moaning and get coaching, FFS.
If nothing else Powell has united the supporters behind him, and enjoyed an extended honeymoon period. He has also played at the top level, worked under a top manager, and is a thoroughly decent bloke.
He is not milking anything, he is just telling it as it is. It seems to me Vol that you and your mates on ITV will use anything that Powell does or says against him, he can't win. I find some of the vitriol and nastiness directed to a decent man beyond the pall.
@ dick Powell's contract situation is well understood. He is not getting a new one . Why does he keep going on about it ? #smokescreen
Nick, the owners will not tell anybody WTF they plan to do, so how do you know they will not be offering Chris a new contract?
Two reasons: 1. He has struggled badly this season, 2. They have offered deals to others they want to keep including Solly, Cousins & Keith in the ticket office. Clearly there is no offer yet CP so ......
Spot on nobody knows. If he goes, then he goes with my good wishes in what he has done for the Club. I just find the constant nastiness and name calling of Powell very undignified and unnecessary. It really isn't necessary to keep on stating that you want Powell out, we get that now. Why numerous posts have to be created on another forum putting the boot into a decent man I don't know. If you don't rate him as a football Manager fair enough but there is no need to be personal. If new owners come in and change the Manager I will support them, if the old owners don't renew Powell's contract I would not agree but I will continue to support Charlton. The Club is in a mess and to put all the blame at Powell's door, as some have, is brainless. Yes some of the tactics have not been good and some of the signings have been poor. With the squad he has got where we are, is about where we should be. Would a new Manager make Church into a prolific scorer? Would he make Danny Green into Stanley Matthews, Sordell into somebody who cares? What we need is somebody like Kevin Philips who can finish a goal scoring midfield player. Are we going to get them? Of course not because we have no money. Is that Powell's fault?
It was a simple question TC that I think deserves a simple answer, don't bandy words and tell us what the Wall think of Lomas
Not sure anyone has name- called CP ? Ok, a few have light heartedly refererred to him on ITTV as 'the Hopeless One'. Pretty mild in the circumstances. Remember the bile n'vitriol that used to be directed at Parky.
Interesting TC And how did the Millwall fans used to feel about Bob Pearson, who made the players eat a bag of donuts with him before training each day?
Well in the 2 months he was in charge he had a very fine record of 2 points from 10 games As you can imagine, he was a crowd favorite.
