Liverpool open talks to make Luis Suárez their highest paid player ever

Merseyside club have begun negotiations that they hope will secure the striker's long-term future

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has opened talks with Luis Suárez’s representatives to discuss the most lucrative contract in Anfield history

Ayre flew to Barcelona on Tuesday for a meeting scheduled with Suárez’s agent Pere Guardiola, the first significant move in trying to tie the 26-year-old to an improved long-term deal thought to be worth more than £130,000 a week. Suárez’s current contract expires in the summer of 2016 and Liverpool know they face a battle to retain the Uruguayan given his extraordinary form.

After the trauma of last summer, when Suárez made it clear that he wanted to leave amid interest from Arsenal, he is settled again on Merseyside and Liverpool will hope to take advantage of the positive vibes around him and the club.

Relations between Liverpool and Guardiola were strained at times last summer but have generally been cordial and not unduly harmed by that period. However, the club know his motivation is not financial as he craves Champions League football.

The demolition of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday significantly enhanced Liverpool’s hopes of finishing in the top four. Suárez was made captain for the game and is likely to retain the honour over the Christmas period with Steven Gerrard injured.

With vice-captain Daniel Agger out of the side and facing an uncertain future, Suárez has been given added responsibility, which the Anfield board hope will cement his future at the club.

Realistically, Suárez may wish to wait to see if Liverpool can consolidate the excellent first half to their campaign, particularly as they have key games away to Manchester City and Chelsea on the horizon. Should the Merseyside club build a lead over their rivals for the Champions League positions in the new year, Liverpool will be confident that Suárez will extend his stay with the club.

Meanwhile, manager Brendan Rodgers has called up Academy-based teenagers Jordan Rossiter and Brad Smith to his first-team squad for the Christmas period. “We’ve had Jordan and Brad training with us, two outstanding young players,” Rodgers said. “Brad has been out for a long time with an injury but he’s got a lot of the attributes to play for Liverpool. He’s super quick, gets high up the pitch naturally and wants to attack but can defend as well.

“Jordan’s got the tools to be a Liverpool player. I looked at him in training on Friday playing with first-team players and I thought ‘there’s a boy who you can take to Stamford Bridge and he’ll fight and pass and put his foot in’. It’s something I’ll look closely at.”

Sign him up! Easily deserves to be the highest paid player in our history and could help persuade him to stay

Surely he's not thinking of playing these lads?

It would be great if Suarez signed but I agree that he'll probably wait until the New Year.

I don't see what they've gained by going public with the fact that they're starting the negotiation process tbh.

Surely it's better to say nothing, get it done & then announce it?

Even if he signs it, I expect him to leave in the summer. By signing an extension, he'll make a lot of money until the end of the season but more importantly, it will ensure we get maximum value from the buying club.

Obviously we have to fight tooth and nail (no pun intended) to keep Suarez and hopefully we get a chance to prove this part of that article: "Relations between Liverpool and Guardiola were strained at times last summer but have generally been cordial and not unduly harmed by that period. However, the club know his motivation is not financial as he craves Champions League football". I'm still not 100& certain he would stay even if we do get CL footy but all we can do is offer him the best terms we can afford, make the most of his talent now and then see where we are at in the summer. He certainly seems to be loving his football at the moment that much is clear.

My biggest worry is that these contract talks become a distraction either to Luis himself or to the team. Let's hope we can get it signed and sealed asap and have a solid release clause in it that will get us the fee he is really worth if he does decide to move on.

Really happy to see another two lads promoted up to the first team squad. It's a boost not only for Jordan and Brad but all the youngsters who can see that Rodgers will put his trust in them if they put the commitment in <ok>

I agree but it just isn't the modern way anymore. It's all about keeping the club as talked about as possible and having the occasional story of interest to save the website being filled with even more guff <laugh> In fairness though there are no quotes from the club in this article so it could possibly have come from his agent as we all know how they like to keep their clients in the headlines too.

Obviously we don't know what has been happening in the background. Both sides have been working on this since the Summer. Perhaps both sides had already agreed to notify each other of any outside contact/interest regarding Suarez. If any outside contact had been made then going public now would be one way of signalling that both sides were aware of it and taking action to counter that interest.

Liverpool do have to achieve 2 things. Firstly secure him for this season. Secondly to minimally ensure that if he is tempted away after the WC that they maximise their profit on him. Only after those 2 do the 'normal' contract negotiations come into play.

see your point Tobes, would say the same thing myself, but as Billy said its to keep the club in the headlines and hopefully get less ****e stories floating around.

hope its not a distraction, i cant see him making a decision before Summer anyway ie us getting top 4 and CL football.

  11. Maybe Suarez will definitely be leaving in the summer and they want clubs to come forth with bids prior to him signing a new deal #tobeshope

Seriously though, there is not one quote in that article that relates to Suarez contract talks. If true, as it come from the club, player or agent? Or is it media BS?

  12. And subsequently, price him out of the market too.

So, how much is Suarez worth to us? if he signs a new 5 year deal and he is about to hit his peak years I reckon RM can cough up more than they did for monkey-boy. £150m will do. ;)

He's one of the hottest properties in World football at the minute & there's therefore bound to be interest & bids for him, probably starting in January.

Whether he wants to stay or would fancy a move would depend on the player himself & who was bidding.

Will he stay next season if you fail to get top 4? Will he if you do? We simply don't know.

There's always a pantomime around this process & it's virtually impossible to call it right as it's a fluid situation, that can change off the back of one phone call.

  15. Subject to Real or Barca knocing at the door, possibly Bayern too, I think he will off. If they don't come in AND we get top four, he will stay. If we fail to get top four, he'll go anyway.

PS..I edited my last comment too.

just hoping a club in CL doesn't offer £60 mill in jan window as i see club accepting it, whether Luis does is a dif story, he may if we are still in a good position want to see if we can get CL football or better? (dreaming) and give us until Summer.

always a possibility of a player included as a sweetener as well.

    I'd agree with you there.

As for the edited bit of your last post - the piece is written by well known kopite Bascombe, so whilst it's got no direct quotes, it's a fair assumption that he's been fed it from a source he considers trust worthy. Who was it? Club PR, manager, agent - who knows, but what's for sure, is that they'll have had an agenda for doing so.

Suarez has already said he's not intending to leave in January, he will stick around to see if we get CL and even then if he wants to stay in the summer I reckon

There's no chance he'll leave in Jan imo.

  20. I'm not convinced he will stay with us come the summer but he won't go anywhere in January. Suarez has the chance to do something special at Liverpool this season. He is scoring for fund and could break some club records as well as help put the club back on the map, maybe (optimistic) even give us a title challenge or win. He will also be aware that it is a world cup year and probably won't want to risk an upheaval before such a major tournament.
