    Sunderland 2-1 Chelsea

Strange game as Chelsea seemed to think it was a practice game. They took the lead through a scrambled own goal and then thought they could sit on it as they had dominated the match possession. Sunderland scored with 2 minutes to go to send it into overtime. Both sides huffed and puffed in OT but Sunderland grabbed the winner with 2 minutes to go. Will give them a lift in morale, but they looked shattered at the end.

<laugh> I had the exact same complaint.

Not sure whether this is bad for us because they'll be fired up, or good because they'll all be dead on their feet. Guarantees them two more midweek games too, and hopefully they'll have their minds on those rather than the league.

The League Cup is a bit of a distraction from the job in hand but it may give Sunderland a short term lift.Their match against us is possibly the key to their survival, but to stand a realistic chance it's a must win for them.if they take three points and move to twelve then, despite being bottom at Christmas, the relegation benchmark, they may only be two points adrift of 17th spot.

I think that anything less than three points and they are probably gone.Sunderland get very little away from home and they really have to amass thirty points from their home games.Having said that their home form exactly matches ours away, two games won,the rest lost.

if you look at their fixtures, the have had a skewed set of home games this season, a lot of games have been against top half sides. therefore they've a lot of winnable home games in the second half. i'm not writing them off at all yet.

whereas we've played cardiff, palace, villa and WHU already, with WBA,fulham, sunderland, stoke and Hull to come.

I always thought the Ba signing was an odd one for Chelsea.

He had one decent season at Newcastle and then bang he gets a big move, he is surrounded by class at Chelsea and just cant hit the heights. Whilst Torres has improved it still isn't enough.

Certainly last night Eto'o and Ba offered very little. Sunderland played well enough without causing much threat until Chelsea fell asleep with 2 minutes to go. The ball was parried by Schwartzer perfectly into the path of Borino who did well to put it in over a scramble in the goal mouth. Ky's goal was a carbon copy of Fer's against WBA.

Eto'o is past his best now, but at his best he was pretty formidable.

Apparently Rooney is touch-and-go to be fit for the festive period. Would be a real bonus for us if him and Van Persie were missing when we played them.
