So When Are We 'Title Challengers'

Discussion in 'Liverpool' started by mighty_stevie_g, Dec 17, 2013.

  1. I think there is little doubt that it would be on over achievement should we somehow win the league. This would obviously put massive pressure on the club next season but it would also see us bring in much better quality too. The only problem.would be expectation, if we have a massively over achieved then it is unlikely to be repeated (immediately), would it see the end of BR or would FSG continue to be patient?

If BR won us the title this season he would be an instant legend and historical figure - I don't think it would be like city and Mancini because we wouldn't just be spending 100m each year with massive wages for slightly above average players until they are replaced with better ones - we have our own plan and vision here and it's not buying short term success.

If he won us the title and got the sack next year for not repeating that - I'd give up with football

  3. You miss understand me. With the way the league is and the competitiveness of the teams involved, it is feasible that we will have massively over achieved and in reality we perhaps shouldn't have even got top four. What if we won the league raising expectation but then things didn't go as well the following season (a more realistic season if you like) AND we struggled with balancing PL & CL football too. We could easily slip back down to 5th-7th. Would this be accepted?

What you said is right assuming we stay in the top four.

I think that a big come down against city and the chavs with us being 5th will be a bigger worry that the repercussions of winning the league.

It's very difficult to answer a scenario like this because the following season failure could be down to many things:

    - If he's bought a load of crap for example after the success
    - Team unmotivated because 'we've done it'
    - Chelsea, city and utd spent 100m each because of what happened in 2013/14

I would say at this moment that I couldn't be part of a group happy to see him sacked after bringing what we've all wanted for 1/4 century so soon. BUT we are all fickle and live for the now so who knows!

  7. I'd like to be excluded from that please <laugh>

That is pretty much what I was getting at though. Obviously, it would be a nice problem to have too.

I think we'd continue the way we have been doing; signing a handful of improvements with the team steadily progressing. The only difference would be in terms of squad numbers but that is the case if we get top four, we would definitely need more players if we are in the CL.

  8. As someone said earlier, we don't want to be top at Christmas!

PS...I'd prefer a Arsenal win to Chelsea <ok>

I wasn't being nasty - at least I wasn't trying to be! I was merely reversing the picture.

On what do you base this contention? If we did win the title then the squad of players that we have would have proved that they could perform better across the season better than any other squad of players. They would therefore not have over achieved any more than you had under estimated.

  16. Do you honestly think we have the best squad of players?

Could you hand on heart say you thought we should be challenging for the title this season prior to it starting?

Despite them winning it last year, do honestly think Man Utd had the best team/squad last year?

They may not have been involved in the title but its still thirty-eight league game; do you not think Newcastle over achieved in 2011-12?

Obviously, anyone that wins the league deserves so having played thirty-eight games, but its not always the best side. Luck and injuries play a big part too.

Leave it out G. IF (note: I'm not saying WILL) we do win it then they will have proved that they are the best squad of players in the Premiership. The results would have proved it. It matters not one jot if other squads are packed with more big named/high rep/high wage players than we have, those players will have proved that they were not as effective over the season. But yes the side that accumulates the most points is proved to be the best side. Other sides may be more exciting and/or play more attractive football but they were not as effective. As for luck and injuries, they effect all sides to a greater or lesser degree during the season.

From day 1, I said we should aim for top spot but I would be happy with a top 4 finish. I haven't shifted from that stance but from what I've seen I now believe that it is possible for us to win the title. We may not do it but it is possible.

As for United you have a short memory. I kept telling them that their win last year had more to do with the shortcomings of the other sides than it do with United's play.
