Just out of curiosity, I looked up Portsmouth's title-winning season under Harry and checked out where they were at the 20 match stage of the season, a wee bit better than us by the look of it... http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/division-one/2002-2003/table/2002-11-27
Oh god... Don't start comparing us with Pompey, we get enough of that from fans/WUM's from other clubs!!
Looking at that table, interesting to note that 11 years on 10/24 of those teams are still in the Championship, with Leicester, Notts Forest, Reading & Burnley still in the promotion hunt.
I love looking at league tables from years gone by. Interesting to remember that Grimsby were ahead of us in the Football League at the time and are now in the Conference. It's fascinating. Just like reading old football programs. A reminder of the changes over the years. I picked up a programme from the 50s for a game between Halifax Town and Bradford Park Avenue while at the same time buying a program from our home game with Spurs game in the 48-49 season. The old programs printed on soft paper with all those adverts for shops and factories which no longer exist in streets that have long since been demolished and pictures of players who were probably in their early twenties but looked as though they were mid-forties at least.
Such a crucial time in the club's history. If we haven't bounced back up from the third tier within a couple of seasons it could well have been a slow lingering death for the club. See Grimsby, Wimbledon and Luton, who were all in a similar position. Really makes you appreciate where we are now only 10 years later, and the ambition of the current owners.
