Would just like to discuss the goal we conceded.

I've read on other fan blogs that some people were putting the blame on Santon for exposing the defense for the goal.

To add to that, even Pardew made a change by taking Santon off and putting on Haidara, what does this show?

Do you guys think it was Santon's fault for the goal, or was it more of the centre backs?

Could more have been done to prevent the goal?

All that said, Southampton are a really good technical team and taking nothing away from them scoring a brilliantly executed goal.

A couple of people were out of position, but all that was exposed by Santon giving the ball away with a piss poor and unnecessary "pass" (not even sure what he was trying). Tiote did his best to stop the inevitable breakaway with his foul on Lallana, but the damage was done. Colo was left 2 vs 1, was easily bypassed, and Krul just slumped lazily to the wrong side when 1 vs 1 with Rodriquez.

Santon was targeted a couple of times down that flank, and easily the weakest member of the defence.

What confused me most was the headline of it all - "Team Leading 1-0 Hit By Counter-Attack", it just shouldn't really happen, we should never be exposing ourselves like that. Santon was mainly at fault, but we were so over-committed it was ludicrous.

Simple one for me. Santon exposed us badly. He had a poor game to be honest. I wouldn't be surprised to see him dropped for Haidara (who I also think has positional issues)

It was well worked and you will concede goals at some stage, its just disappointing when you shoot yourself in the foot. I'm probably still more disappointed with Remy's two misses. Obviously you have to cut the lad some slack given his efforts for us but they were gilt edged.

Have to say I thought it was Santon's fault, but I think thats what's going to happen if you play a right footer on the left, would Massido Haidara or Paul Dummett gone tearing across the centre of the park? Never! They would have bombed down the wing. I think this is something the coaches should be working day-in day-out on with Davide to get his confidence/ability in his left foot up.

The pass was poor but the main problem was that we had, for almost the first time in the game, lost discipline and allowed far to many players to go forward. If the pass had been better or if we had players behind the ball the goal wouldn't have happened.

I don't think that either Colo or Krul can be faulted. Colo was nutegged and Krul went the wrong direction and then looked foolish trying to correct but they were left badly exposed.

Newcastle went in front after 27 minutes when Mathieu Debuchy's free-kick was headed back by Mike Williamson and Gouffran reacted first to collect the ball, sidestep the 'keeper and stroke the ball home at the Gallowgate End.

Good start, pity about their goal but being in 6th place isn't such a bad thing.

Santon had an option out on the right wing but choose to try to pass through players, considering that at the time 3 of our players were in an off side position ahead of him it was an even poorer decision that he made, Collo and Krull could do very little in reality themselves to prevent Southampton scoring.

Can't feel too bad abut a draw against Southampton. Yes it was conceded in an annoying way but slip ups will happen now and then - - there have been very few lately.

If we can get 3 points against Crystal Palace and something against Stoke we will have firmly established ourselves as part of the chasing pack. Better than we had any right to expect. Wouldn't be surprised if Mike goes in for a bit of January shopping again as well.

Was a bad pass but the Williamson was out of position and left Coloccini exposed.

Can't put blame on Williamson, if you look at the point Santon goes to make the pass the team is well out of shape, Santon had options and choose the worst one.

Granted but maybe at 1-0 up he should have been more cautious, thought Williamson was brilliant on Saturday.

Both goals were poor goals to concede. More entertaining than a 0-0 draw. All round a good game I thought.
