PTC,what i would say on the promotion subject, who would have thought the scummers would have stayed up? You can never tell if the squad is good enough until they are there.
I seem to recall we were expected and expecting to be relegation fodder after our last promotion to the big time. Seem to recall something else happened instead!
I think we should be concentrating on getting promoted first before we start to speculate on whether we have a good enough squad to stay in the PL! Promotion should be a realistic aim next season once Mick has finally sorted the playing staff out from top to bottom!
Oh christ yeah thats right JWM, we have a hell of a way to go to reach that and you could probably count about 12 clubs thinking the same, and some of them are in a hell of a better position. One thing we don't need to improve is the manager. We have a bloke who at least a quarter premiership clubs would give their right arm for.
I thought Norwich would stay up, they had put a decent squad together which had been together a couple of years and Lambert is a top top manager. I know you can never know if a squad is good enough but we're very early days atm and looking at our squad I think I'd prefer if as JWM said give Mick another season to put his mark on the team and improve the quality a bit before we're able to compete in the PL. Even for the sake of our youngsters as I doubt if we went up this season our youngster would get a look in. Of course I wouldn't be dissapointed if we were promoted I just feel it's too early in this teams development and I'm sure Mick would look at this team and look too strenghten quite dramatically if we were to be promoted.
Very true but the point is, that team was a darn sight better than this one and it had been gradually build upon over 5 years.
True but if PL is the aim, I think we should try to build a team in a way that has a chance to stay there, I'm not sure this team would, which is basically what you said in the second sentence, give Mick the chance to properly sort out the team first. I'd be happy to finish this season just outside the playoffs and next a serious challenge for the playoffs would then be reasonable, as long as we show progression.
Not sure that's the case, I'm sure the majority of Championship clubs would as he has one of the best most consistent records in this division but still big question marks over his ability in the PL, which is why I don't think any PL clubs went for him.
It doesn't but looking at our squad would you be happy with that in the PL? Alot of us a few weeks ago didn't think it was even good enough for the championship.
It all depends on if we plan on trying to stay there or use the promotion for financial reasons. We could theoretically spend nothing, come back down again and use the parachute payments to progress further, a bit like WBA.
yeah I don't think that'd be a bad thing. But I geuss it just depends on how bad we could be, we could get hammered every week and have such low confidence that when we go down we struggle to turn the tide, it would be nice to see us a little more competitive. But the parachute payments etc would be nice if we use them sensibly
