At the end of the day it will be completely down to Shaw. If he wants to leave, he will (and NC will get the best price possible for him) but I don't think he does want to leave.

I do think we will get someone in in January, though. I think it's a good time to buy with many out of contract in the summer and with the world cup around the corner. All about the right player at the right price and I don't think there's any doubt that we can improve the first 11/15 in certain areas.

If the right player doesn't present himself then no problem. No need to buy. It's a nice position to be in.

Yeah I think Shaw will eventually end up at Chelsea. Depending on Shaw's development and Ashley Cole's form/fitness he might even go there this summer but I don't think he'll go in January.

As far as Shaw is concerned I think you're right. As far as bringing a player in is concerned, I think we have a very small pool to pick from. Someone made a very good point the other day about Champions League players. The quality players, that is, the ones Saints need to be going for, are invariably tied up in the Champions or Europa Leagues at present. That leaves a small pool of players who have had Champions League experience, have aspirations to continue with another club, can be convinced that Saints are the right club, and play in a position where Saints feel they can improve on what they have.

Personally, I don't think there is anyone out there, at the moment. End of season is another matter.

The only reason I can see for us to buy in January might be to accept that foreign players take time to bed into the PL, so, what with the World Cup blowing part of the summer out of the water, a purchase made now might just be coming good for the start of next season better than someone bought in the summer itself.

I still predict no purchases, though.

Pure speculation or have you been hearing things from your source?

Speculation, but we are watching a few players. I can see us bringing in a wing on loan like we tried to do in August.

It also depends who we sell, if we get a good bid for Ramirez he is gone and we will need to replace.

Whilst I agree that there will obviously be more players willing and available to move in the summer (probably post world cup which could be an issue) - there are still plenty of players out there who are looking for a january move and who would be improvements on what we have/make the difference in certain areas.

Off the top of my head players like Martins Indi, De Vrij, De Bruyne, McGeady, Julio Cesar, Fischer, Hesnnesey etc

I'd also definately consider a short term loan, someone intelligent who can make a difference and give others a rest in a position where we possibly don't have a youth player who is ready to fill the gap. Someone like Landon Donovan perhaps.

As for Shaw to Chelsea i'm trying to think of alternative left back options for Chelsea. Certainly no one in the premier league stands out as a better option than Shaw. My knowledge of the other major leagues outside the big clubs is minimal. Hopefully Jose knows a cheaper Spanish option.

This is assuming they think they need one at all. Cole isn't done yet, they have Bertrand, and Azpilicueta is very good on the left too.

I would have agreed in the summer but Cole has seemingly gone from 1st on team sheet to rotation player under Mourinho. Bertrand does not look like he has a future, so I won't be shocked if Chelsea sign a full back next summer.

And Azpilicueta has really emerged this season...I doubt that they're terribly desperate for a left back, nor do I think that they can offer Shaw much by way of playing time for a couple years.

Azpilicueta is a right back though. That's why there's been so much fuss about him getting picked at left back ahead of Cole.

He was a rather rare creature, though: a predominantly left-footed right back, converted from his days as an inverted winger. Mourinho appears to prefer him on the left, and he looks better there in many respects.

Offering Cole a 1 yes contract says to me he's done. He's not 38 like Lampard so 1 year is not good news for him. Bertrand looks like he's Everton's choice to fill Baines' boots. Thats not to say that Evra is done???? but Moyes will surely go for Baines over Shaw????

At the end of the day most of the top 6 could do with Shaw so it could either turn into who's got the biggest wallet or all of them backing down rather than pay over the odds.

Unless Shaw wants to go, and I see no sign of that, I think he will stay. The Southampton Way is not about making a killing on transfers; it's about developing a successful team with a high proportion of home-grown talent, with strategic purchases to maintain progress up the league in the shorter term. Selling Shaw, unless the player wants to go, flies in the face of this philosophy.

Too much small club mentality here. Shaw is not leaving.
