The London Evening Standard has recetnly floated the suggestion that Spurs may be prepared to make an offer for Rio. With the imminent arrival of Jones and the continuing development of Smalling, might this not make sense if we can get Modric in return.

Depends how much they offer for him imo. He's still got a season or two left in him, and his experience will be invaluable if it helps Smalling and Jones bed in, and wins us title number 20 in that time.

Rio wouldn't want to leave our great club, but it would be excellent business on our end it this go forward. But I cant see SAF allowing this to happen we need Rio experience will reards to bring along the like's of Smalling and Jones plus his key in the big game and would be very much required and needed to help us win title number 20 etc.

We should keep Rio, especially after seeing how shaky our defence looked when he was injured.

not going to happen. you need some experience in the centre of defense other than vidic. although smalling is improving rapidly.

shame, it would be a good deal <ok>

Tbh I floated the idea of moving Rio on TWO SEASONS AGO provided we replaced him with a top class defender. Basically, it was because he had back problems and was always likely to miss large numbers of games. I think he's top class but a player is only top class for as many minutes as he is on the pitch. 2 years ago, we could have got £20 million+ for him, which is why I thought it was the time to sell. Now, we'd do well to get £10 million for him. No real value in selling now imo.

Well, if he can sell for 15 million plus, which is unlikely then go ahead and sell him, smalling can step up to the plat <3

absolute rubbish, ever heard of thuram, cannavaro, maldini and puyol??!! in the last decade all infinately superior to rio ferdinand no question. in italy cannavaro was considered better than nesta in the early 2000s. If rio in his wildest dreams played like cannavaro did in euro 2000 youd be saying greatest of all time lol

Bollox! If you watched Cannavarro over the last decade, rather than for 2 months in 2006, you'd realise that Rio is, and was, infinitely better. Did you see Cannavarro at Real Madrid the following season? No, of course you didn't. Because if you had, you'd have seen a guy who had hit his peak and fell spectacularly. Maldini was better than Rio and was probably the best defender of all time imo. Puyol was and still is fantastic and I'm a huge fan but he's a very different defender to Ferdinand. he's more similar to Vidic. Thuram, again was fantastic but played much of his best football at full back. Rio has been an absolute world class defender and deserves any praise he receives. I'm not some rose tinted United fan who thinks we have world class players right throughout the team and squad but i do get annoyed when people question Ferdinand because anyone who has seen the guy play at United will be able to tell you how good he is.

Definitely can't imagine that happening. Rio will stay until he retires, in my opinion.

I may have been at fault for saying defender and not CB because then i disagree with my own point. That would open the door for people like thuram, R.Carlos, Cafu etc. I'll happily admit that i forgot about maldini and yes, he is better. Thuram as i've said is more of a fullback now and even though i do rate puyol, if he didn't have his injuries, i would prefer to have rio. That's probably just my united bias showing through though.

merry supersteve, you do make me laugh... iv just re read what youv said, you said if id seen cannavaro over the whole decade then mention 06 and 07 when he was 35!! from 1998 onwards prob til 06 miles miles better than rio different class. maldini is a great defender second in italy only to baresi - heard of him? think rio x100. thuram was still better at cb than rio even though a fullback - rio is a good player no doubt butyour bias is mentioning him in the same breath as people who have won world cups and starred in euro champs which he aint

I don't know about that but injury-free Ferdinand is still the best defender in the world at this moment.

again showing your ignorance, cannavaro wasnt in the champs league winning teams as he was unsaleable for parma they simply refused to sell and fans threatened to burn the ground down when rumour was he was going to acmilan.
seriously mate his performances with nesta in euro2000 and france 1998 were absolutely incredible not to mention being best player in worldcup06, what has rio ever done in international tournaments? **** all thats what doesnt scream world class to me.

We were discussing the last decade and last time I checked, 1998 didn't fall into that period. Also, he was not 35 in either 06 or 07 and no amount of exclamation marks on your part will change that, will they? And I've already said, throughout his career, cannavarro did not achieve as much as Rio and was not as good as him. You can argue all you like but it's a legitimate argument. And winning a European Championships or World Cup is a team achievement, not individual one, but whilst we're going on your criteria, how many of the players you listed have reached 3 Champions League finals in 4 years?
