If he wanted to leave he would not have signed a new contract.

Unless he is such a good guy that he wants to help the club out by getting the best possible deal for him when he does go. I'm not going to get into a tug of war conversation over this as really I hope I am way off the mark. <ok>

' If he wanted to leave he would not have signed a new contract. '

Do you honestly believe that? We don't know what clauses have potentially been inserted.

He certainly wouldn't have requested a transfer, as he wouldn't be entitled to money from us by forcing a deal, that would be void.

I think it's fairly safe to say he's more than happy to spend the entire season with us, but from next summer onward - do you think he'll want to stay next season?

He's created the most assists in the football league, carry this on and he will attract some interest from some very decent clubs. I cannot see him being here next season should we be in the championship, he's very much a premiership player.

I agree that we don't know the details of the contract.

I can see why the club would want to get him on a contract even if they wanted to cash in on him in the summer but i can't see any benefit to Cressy signing up if its in the forefront of his mind that he wants a move in six months. Im not saying he will not leave because we don't know whats gonna happen or who may come in for him but i don't believe its his plan to leave or that his head will be turned by just anyone.

I can see the better players sticking around if MM continues to build and improve things at the club by all accounts its an enjoyable place to be at the moment and that is a hard thing to leave behind especially when your playing week in week out on a decent wage and enjoying your football and have a good bunch around you.

But who Knows what the next few months will bring.....

With all the paper talk of supposed quotes from MM it sounds like Town are ready to offload Cressy to the highest bidder in January, if so that would be a huge blow to the team because unlike MM i dont think Mings is a ready made replacement.
I had hoped this team would stay together and be improved but maybe ME wants some money back.

I think the club and MM are just accepting reality, there will be interest In Cresswell. If a good offer comes in its going to accepted which will be a shame but would hopefully be re-invested in other areas of the squad/ pay our invoices. I wouldn't be surprised if we tried to get a deal where we loaned him back for the rest of the season.

Or it may just be that Mick is building a decent squad at Town and wants to keep hold of his better players! I know that is an extraordinary idea but hey! <ok>

Every player will have a price where the club will decide they will prefere the money rather than the player. Its the nature of the business. With a longer contract then it just means we don't have to make a rushed decision. Other than that I don't think it really changes anything

I just think it is typical that when we hear some really good positive news there are people that just want to sneer and be cynical! Just accept it for what it is! Why try and piss all over it? That's all I'm saying! <ok>

Of course he wants to do that, but it's not his call to make. A lot depends on getting promoted in the next couple of seasons. Can't see Cresswell staying beyond that in the Champ.

Think your close to mark there hampy. MM is quite obviously trying to build a competitive team/squad. Cressy is our best player and I would hope he wants to see us reach prem with him in the team. But how long will he give us. Just the rest of this season. Yes. Next season?????? Who knows. I heard just prior to him signing WBA were preparing a 3 million bid. Hopefully they'll be put off. And lets be honest with ourselves here guys,we know contracts mean very little in football.

For me it just shows he is happy at the club and the direction we are heading.

It seems that whenever we get some good news our first reation is 'whats the catch'.

I don't think it is anything other than good news tbh, he's clearly a PL player in the making and is our best player for some time, I'd argue he's been our best player for nearly a decade, I can't think of another player who has played so consistently well over 3 seasons in the past decade.

But I do wonder how long we can keep onto him for, clearly we'd all like him to be here for the long term but I truely think he's ready for the step up now and how many more seasons will he be prepared to wait for PL experience? The only thing I'd say which has stopped clubs bidding for him so far is that clubs don't tend to spend alot of money on fullbacks and I'm sure we'd hold out a decent price for him.

And as much as this sounds silly I don't want us to get promoted this season and maybe not even next season. I don't think we have a good enough squad to compete in the PL, I'd rather see Mick build a team up over a few seasons which are more ready for the PL and have grown as a group rather than a squad which would need major major work on. I'd rather us get promoted after a few seasons of building where we'd just buy a handful of players to improve the team. Problem is I'm not sure Cresswell will stay around that long, although that is part and parcel of football, we get decent money for him (especially with the new contract) and hopefully reinvest it in the team, we had to sell players every year under Burely but we gradually built a good team.

PTC, your third paragraph is a topic for whole new thread. I understand what you're saying, but promotion at any time will be more than welcome.

You can never tell if a squad is ready for the premier league. What we do know is that MM knows how to keep a team in a league and that the extra money would only help whether we survive or fall straight back.

That is quite true, I just think our squad really is along way away from being a PL team, infact it's a pretty average if not poor squad for the Championship. I just don't want to see us do what Palace have done this season where they basically went up and spent a load of money on players completely changing the team they went up with. As I've said before it's not all about the PL for me (that is the ultimate goal) or points, it takes the connection away from the fans a bit if you suddenly buy a bunch of new players for alot of money (and that doesn't often work either) then you usually end up relegated with a bunch of overpaid players who don't want to be there.

Tbf Reading went up with a very average team and didn't spend a great deal of money and I'm sure it done them some good but as I say I'd rather see us gradually build over a few seasons

As Mike says, promotion would be welcome as soon as it happens. Would rather be a yo-yo club with some extra revenue than take the chance of slowly building in the championship whilst other teams around us are being promoted and relegated, thus making them financially stronger than us and making the job more difficult.
