For Nines and Bhatia and all those with an interest in the minutiae of the club's history. http://qprreport.proboards.com/thread/21264 A word of warning, don't ever ask Zicohoops about the apostrophe that London Transport think is in Shepherds Bush!!!
Cheers for that Roller. I think I prefer our name without the apostrophe. That letter by Ron Phillips was an excellent post on 'Report' and explains the story perfectly.
Thanks Roller, interesting stuff. I have to say (although it's not something I've thought about much before and I certainly won't lose any sleep over it), that I reckon we should bring back the apostrophe. It's omission at the end of 1967 was obviously an oversight (probably caused by the printers not having an apostrophe in the new font), rather than a deliberate decision. How odd.
Still doesn't explain why, and where the little chap ended up.... There are some dangerous places out there (mostly on greengrocers boards it has to be said) where an unsuspecting apostrophe can end up stranded. Maybe these days, he just sits between the cabbages and leeks...
The irony of the timing, as well as City the owner wants to drop the AFC from our name. On Saturday we're live on TV against Stoke, with a load of FA dignitaries in attendance to commemorate the fact that one of the founding fathers of the FA is from Hull. Celebrating our part in the history of Association Football in the same week as asking to remove Association Football Club from our name. It's a bit like you asking for your apostrophe back at the same time as asking for the monarchy to be disbanded.
Its a very valuable way to distinguish us from the Titans that are Scottish League 2 team, Queen's Park. The oldest club in Scotland (1867) the only fully amateur one in the Scottish Professional League, and still playing home games at Hampden Park, capacity 52,000, average home attendance 750. Plenty of leg space.
