I was having this conversation with a Liverpool supporting friend the other day though. My thought on Suarez is I prefer my fantastic players to not be racists who bite people. Might be irrelevant to how good a player he is (although you can certainly argue that a player who gets suspended for roughly 1 in every 3 games or something to be a bit of a hindrance) but I'm going to say it anyway. He's a dick.

    Best player in 2013?

    @bbc606: 2013 stats:
    Ronaldo: 56 games - 67 goals - 18 assists
    Ribery: 51 games - 22 goals - 28 assists
    Messi: 47 games - 45 goals - 16 assists

It would be a joke if anyone other then Ronaldo won the ballon D'or

It would be a joke if it was ever based purely on stats ... for one, penalty takers would have a distinct advantage ... the likes of Ashley Young would have many 'assists' if you count the dives .... it has to be based on the actual performances of the individual, taking into account both the significance of the games and strength of opposition too ...

Not saying you are wrong but a straigh reading of stats can be misleading .... for instance, Nuge might pass himself off as a goalscorer <whistle> <laugh> <cheers>

Yeah Ribery plays in a tougher league, all 3 play for very overpowered clubs though.

Id agree that Ronaldo would deserve it, though i bet none of those stats would be anywhere near those figures if they played in the Premier league every week.

Nice to see a player outside the Spanish leagues in the top 3 anyway <ok>

I personally think one of the Bayern wingers should win it.

The 'Robbery" partnership has won Bayern the Champions League and the Bundesliga.

Ronaldo hasn't been any worse than usual, but the hype around him at the moment is silly.

If Messi wasn't injured everyone would say he should win, it's based on the entire year not the last month.

No ... this year he has been 'at Real' ... I also think you have oversimplified Portugal's qualification ... they have some fine players.

Still think Messi is the better player and still deserves it.

I don't like reading the stats and much prefer to just make my judgement based on actual gameplay. Ronaldo scores and does wonderful things but Messi doesn't lose the ball at all, ever and always manages to do something. Ronaldo just has that powerful running and powerful shooting which is fantastic but I feel Messi offer so much more.

I'm actually surprised Ronaldo has as many assists as that.

He's the most in form player, but Messi is still the best player in the world.

Form wise Ronaldo is the best and the better out the 2 this year. But overall I really couldnt separate them.

Both are unbelievably good. They are both very consistent and both deserve all the plaudits they get

Messi's form has never dipped, so he should still be regarded as the best, though Ronaldo will win it this year

This season he has been about on par with Messi and Ronaldo class

I love watching Suarez play, he has everything you would want in a footballer

Just a shame he is an utter bellend
