"Yes it would be nice to have the pacey wingers, the creative middle with two top attacking players there as well as the solid MF
but I think you'd have to have a team of 13 or so players.
You just can't have the solidness of AVB's midfield AND the attacking flair, openness and pace of Harry's team."

    Not every game.
IMHO the point of a squad is not only to have depth of cover for positions, but also a Swiss army
knife in terms of players and formations. I am happy for managers to have preferred styles of play,
but also plans B, C etc.

One such formation will have to be the flank play of 2010-12, because it doesn't currently look like
Soldado is going to deliver without it. Which means Lennon, or a Townsend who plays like Bale 2010-11
and not like he is Bale 2012-13.

If we had our current defensive approach and success while having the attacking talent of Redknapps team, we could be viewed as title challenges but thats just a nice dream.

Managers in general are viewed as attack minded or defensive minded.

    Wenger. Attack minded .

    Mourinho. Defensive minded.

    Fergie. Attack minded .

When you a team that brings both together, it can be something special, like Bayern Munich.

Avb, for me, is a defensively minded coach and the general theme is to work hard, close down and control. to also be free flowing and entertaining is a tough ask.

Sure there will be games when it all gels, as we have quality players but I think we will always be lacking that expressive flow under Avb, yet that doesn't mean he will fail, as his 'mentor', jose is defensive yet hugely successful and his teams sometime produce great attacking displays, yet generally his teams are workmen like and effective.

Oh well its the last one, tedious group game that is, I won't care what happens here unless some youngsters play.

Its an odd feeling, no-one likes this comp, but its possible we could end up with no Euro footy, would we miss it? I think its a factor in L'pool doing better so far without this comp.

Totally agree. I've always supported the fact that it's a trophy and we should be trying to win trophies, but there's no doubt IMO that it will have an affect on us as the season progresses.

If we don't qualify for top 4 this year, we've got to go back to binning it off, IMO.

I think that it should have been a useful opportunity to give a number of our fringe players game, which would still have seen us progress, in all likelyhood.
Unfortunately we played too many first XI players and it's cost us in a variety of ways. Rose's injury is probably the most obvious one.

I think we equal our British record of most consecutive European wins if we manage a victory in this one. Not sure if the two qualifying games count, though.
    That's something, I guess.

Depends, anyone know whether Chirches or Vertonghen will be back for Sunday? If not then I think we have to give Dawson and Capoue another game together, partially because Fryers is the only other option and partially because they could do with the practice together. If at least one of them is fit again...

    Friedel
    Smith, Dawson, Fryers, Naughton
    Capoue, Holtby
    Sigurdsson, Lamela, Townsend
    Soldado

Should be enough to get us another win, I think.

Friedel; Smith, Kaboul, Chiriches, Fryers; Capoue, Dembele; Lamela, Holtby, Townsend; Soldado

If possible, I'd like to see McEvoy and Coulthirst get cameos from the bench. The group is already sewn up, so there's no reason not to give them their moment.
