Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has warned his side that they are not currently good enough to remain in the Barclays Premier League. Following Saturday's 2-1 defeat by Tottenham the Black Cats sit five points adrift of safety at the bottom of the table. And while manager Poyet remains optimistic about dragging his side to safety, he has stressed that their performances must show greater consistency. "You can't do it every now and then. With all respect, we don't get paid to do our job today but not tomorrow, and maybe on Wednesday but not on Saturday. "At the moment, we are not good enough. Sometimes being honest doesn't mean that you are negative. I am not, I am very positive. I am realistic and at the moment, that's what we are. "We want to keep going, yes. The desire, the fighting, the spirit - the players are trying their best. "At the moment it's not enough, so we will see how we are going to change." Some have pointed out that the Mackems have suffered misfortune in recent games - own goals having proved costly in home against Spurs and Chelsea. However, while other bosses may be content to blame a lack of luck on their side's deficiencies, Poyet is in no mood to do likewise. "Luck is once or twice. Five own goals in seven games, eight games? No, I'm not taking that, I'm sorry. "I think we were lucky at the end because it could have been 5-1. At the moment, I see too many players of the opposition playing against us probably their best games of the season. "Do you think that that's a coincidence as well? You have to be very naive to think that. "[Chelsea's Eden] Hazard had his best game of the season against us; today probably [Kyle] Walker had his best game of the season against us. I can go on and on and on. "It has become too easy to play against Sunderland and you have to take it. "My job - I'm a head coach, I coach, I convince players what is the best way to play football. I try to convince them constantly. "In training I show them, I tell them, I repeat to them and we keep doing it and we keep doing it. "It's going to be like a hammer in your head constantly. Now if we can get it before Saturday, we have a chance. If we don't, it's going to be worse and worse, it's as simple as that."
Those players had their best games to look at because they were up against absolute ****e. They'd make me look good x
You will see if you check my posts that I very rarely swear on these boards, but you sir/madam can **** off.
He is right, he is also the right man for this job, I am just not sure we will manage to stay up, I just hope if we do go down we can hold on to him.
absolutely bang on. and whilst it is v similar to what PDC said, I believe his approach to fixing it will be much better/different. It may not work this season as we need to ship out the shoite, but as others say i hope we hang on to him coz he looks like a great long-term management prospect
I'm as certain that we have had more shocking decisions against us than anyone else in the Premier as I am that you are a twat, which is 100%..
This - completely love everything the bloke says. He seems to put it across in a way that is basically saying what Di Canio did without the negativity towards individuals and public slating of the players. He is the man to take thi club forward and, even if we go down, he stays with us (and I hope I'm not in the minority with that one). He seems to know his football and has a team which is playing football in the right way - OK so we were poor on Saturday but his philosophy stays the same. I liked the way he tried to do it differently on Saturday by playing the 3 centre mids and putting Celutska on as a wing back - OK so it didn;t work but at least it's different to the previous game to try to force the issue and fit the players in.
Poyet MUST stay on as our manager no matter what happens this season. Apparently he has a 1 million bonus if he keeps us up, surely that means Short recognizes what a hard task that is otherwise there wouldnt be such a big amount so I wouldnt expect Short to sack Gus if we went down. Having said that, I dont think we will be going down yet - there are many big games coming up against teams that we should (on paper) be able to beat. Points against Spurs and Chelsea (plus Man City) were always going to be a bonus.
