The last time I remember playing them was away in the Autoglass Cup in the 90s – and it’d be fair to say that doesn't really count. Before then, they beat us over two legs in the League Cup 1st Round in the late 80s Before that, I reckon last league match was in 86/87 – when they went down from the old Div 2 – seem to recall us drawing 2-2 at their place (could be wrong).
Macc or Rochdale away would be great. However, depending on the result of Monday nights game these could be superseded
It really is 1987 since we last played them in the League - checked Hull City Mad for the stats. I can't believe Grimsby were playing in the 2nd tier as recently as 2003 though, yet we've missed them for over 20 years via relegations/promotions.
dear me!!!!! we are aspiring to Grimsby, a inconsequencial non-league outfit from Lincolnshire with no historical relevance to Hull City at all??????
Thought we won that night and sent them down? I remember their fans went on what passes for 'the rampage' after the game and trashed a few windows in Cleethorpes High St., as City fans boarded their buses parked along the seafront. Went there on Easter Monday in 1980 when the buses had to go round by Goole, making it an 150 mile trip there and back. Got a useful draw there as they were at the top and we were at the bottom. In the return game a few weeks later (original Saturday match had been postponed cos of frost) another draw and they brought several thousand (as you do when you win the league). Arguably the best days to be a Grimsby fan. The rivalry was really one way though as it was Sheff U above all others, and then a revolving door of Sheff Wed, Bradford, Barnsley, Rotherham.
If people don't see the attraction in a cup game against Grimsby, well, I'd be gobsmacked. There's no aspiring to play them, it would just be a "nice thing". For them gate wise, for us from a History perspective (surely every member of CTWD would love this??). I'd really hate to think any of our fans were so uppity they'd think a game like this is just beneath us. We have no need, and should have no desire to look down on them with contempt. We should reserve that for the knob cheeses from actual Hull that support Leeds, Liverpool, Man U etc. Whether you love or loath the other side of the watter, feel the same about Humberside, Lincs, whatever, this region defined us, and this would be a great game for our region.
We've basically played almost every club in the country in the last ten years (except a handful of the new ones). The attraction used to be playing someone new or from a higher division. That's gone now. We're one of the big teams, there to be shot at. Let's get out ASAP and get our League survival guaranteed.
I’d take that providing it’s painless, e.g. narrowly losing with a rotated squad at Villa/Spurs or somebody decent and excusable; otherwise I’d prefer a non interference ****e team at home we can beat with Proschwitz et al. If we can ‘step’ into the latter rounds, perhaps we could have a smash ‘n’ grab at glory without the mileage? Although the league is certainly our priority and last season, and it could be argued that Wigan couldn`t handle the balance of a successful cup run/staying up.
I don't think either side of the Humber like the county of Humberside. After all, it was forced upon us. So saying it defines us is pushing it a bit.
It was known as the Humber Derby or the Humberside Derby. Mind you, the same journos probably also called us a 'north east town', a 'north-east sea port' and other such ****e.
