Leonardo Ulloa Despite spending £8.5m on Jozy Altidore in the summer, Sunderland are still searching for goals having scored just five this season – only Stoke have scored less in the Premier League. This hunt for a striker could lead them to Brighton's Leonardo Ulloa. The Argentine has been a sensation at The Amex, scoring 18 goals in all competitions since his January move from Spanish side Almeria. A typical targetman with height, strength and aerial ability, Ulloa has shown he can score goals in the Championship – is he ready for the step up? He has since come out to quash speculation, but by time January rolls around and interest becomes concrete he may not feel the same way. Liam Bridcutt Bridcutt, 24, was formerly on the books at Chelsea before a move to Brighton in 2010. Since then, the combative defensive midfielder has made 142 appearances for the Seagulls in all competitions, clinching successive Player of the Awards in 2011-12 and 2012-13. Bridcutt may be small, but he wins the ball back well and plays simple passes to keep possession for his team. Sunderland have a similar player in Lee Cattermole, but Bridcutt is a technically better player and his disciplinary record is a lot cleaner. Will Buckley Sunderland let Stephane Sessegnon leave, but did bring in Emanuele Giaccherini and Charis Mavrias in the summer. Adam Johnson hasn't quite lived up to his billing since his move from Manchester City, which could lead Poyet to add competition on the flanks. Buckley, 23, signed for Poyet's Brighton for £1m in 2011, and has gone on to score almost 20 goals from the wing during his spell at The Amex. Pacey and with good dribbling ability, Buckley poses a threat when running at defences – but he's wildly inconsistent and frustrating at times, which makes you wonder whether he can cut it at a higher level. Liam Bridcutt says it will be hard to resist an opportunity to play in the Premier League. Albion fans fear the midfielder general will be targeted by former boss Gus Poyet at Sunderland when the January transfer window opens. Promoted arch rivals Crystal Palace had a £1.75 bid rejected for Bridcutt at the end of the August transfer window. The ex-Chelsea prospect, back in the Albion team after injury and under contract until 2015 said: "I'm a Brighton player. As long as I am contracted to Brighton I am going to give 110 per cent to Brighton. "If you are doing well you are always going to get interest from other clubs and as a player that's what you want. You want to be performing and for other clubs to notice that. "For me it's just a case of getting back in the team and performing and trying to do the best I can for Brighton. I have always said that I want to be a Premier League player and the only way I am going to do that is by performing. "It's going to be even better if I can do it with Brighton but if there is an opportunity for me to do it with another club it's going to be hard for me to turn it down. Vilakazi linked with Sunderland Bidvest Wits midfielder Sibusiso Vilakazi has attracted the interest of English Premier League side Sunderland. Vilakazi has been linked with a number of local sides, including Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, but it seems a move to Europe could be on the cards, with a club in Portugal also reportedly interested. “There has been some talk about Sunderland [who Bidvest have a partnership with] in England and another team in Portugal,” he tells KickOff.com. “The move to Portugal is most promising. Beleaguered Poyet is exploring ways to bolster his side, who sit five points adrift at the foot of the Premier League table, and has identified vastly experienced Cesar as someone who could trigger a revival. The 34-year-old has been told he can leave Loftus Road and wants a move to ensure his place in the Brazil side for this summer’s World Cup. Although Rangers were relegated from the Premier League last season, Cesar was one of the few to emerge with credit for his performances. QPR would prefer a permanent transfer but Sunderland boss Poyet wants to push through a loan deal until the end of the season and take over Cesar’s wages. Poyet has used Vito Mannone in goal since first choice Keiren Westwood picked up a head injury against Hull City in November yet Sunderland have still only taken one point out of the last 12. Sunderland brought in 14 players during the summer and, while Poyet is also desperate to bring in a striker, he is unsure how many new signings he will be allowed to bring in. Poyet said: ‘I’m working on changing things in January, that’s for sure. But that doesn’t affect my thinking about now. ‘There are things going on behind the scenes in terms of the transfer window - that hasn’t changed - and I’m confident they will happen. Adding further weight to his burgeoning reputation as one of the most promising young talents in the country, India under-19 midfielder Brandon Fernandes has been invited by Premier League club Sunderland for a trial for the second time in a span of three months. The 19-year-old was first invited by Sunderland in October this year after the club's scouts monitored his performances in the Second Division of South African league, playing for ASD Cape Town. However, since Sunderland were undergoing a managerial change that week, they were asked to return later in the year. "ASD Cape Town can confirm that Brandon Fernandes spent two weeks with Sunderland earlier this year where he received an excellent technical report. He was scouted by Sunderland in Cape Town whilst playing for ASD's SAFA 2 side," the club said in a statement. "His time at Sunderland was the week in which Sunderland changed their management and Paulo Di Canio was sacked. As a result, both players were requested to return to Sunderland later in the year." Fernandes, a product of I-League club Salgaocar's youth side, burst onto the scene with his performances for the India U-19 team during the AFC U-19 qualifiers in Tehran. He impressed again when, playing for Salgaocar's youth team, he put up noteworthy performances at a tournament organised by Manchester United in Manchester. Based on his performances in that tournament, ASD Cape Town came calling and he became the first Asian player to be signed by the South African team. Since then, he has been the most talked about Indian youth footballer. The midfielder, with a reputation of being a dead-ball specialist, scored 12 goals in as many matches for his club in the second division and four of those goals came from free-kicks. His performances in South Africa haven't gone unnoticed. He has invited by English clubs like Reading and Leicester City earlier this year. And though the Goan teenager failed to land contracts with either of the sides, ASD are optimistic about his future. Hull City manager Steve Bruce could look to re-sign one of his former players in Sebastian Larsson this January, it has emerged. The Swedish international has previously played for Bruce at both Birmingham City and Sunderland, and could be available this January as he has not always been a regular for the Black Cats this season. Hull are hoping to secure Premier League survival this season after winning promotion from the Championship last term, and hope to add some depth to their squad when the transfer window re-opens. SportsDirect News now understands that Larsson is among Bruce's top targets, as he remains a fan of the 28-year-old's passing ability and technique. Larsson, who started his career at Arsenal, is known for excellent delivery from set pieces and long range shots when at his best, and his top-level experience could also prove crucial for the Tigers this season. The 20-year-old, along with fellow promising Pools youngster Luke James, have been watched by a host of clubs after impressing for the League Two outfit this season. And a Sunderland scout, along with representatives from Stoke, Blackburn and Huddersfield, were in attendance for Pools’ FA Cup clash with Coventry City last weekend.
