http://www.thisisstaffordshire.co.u...-says-legend/story-12754188-detail/story.html STOKE legend Jimmy Greenhoff reckons Jon Walters will be hard to shift from City's first team, even if Tony Pulis spends heavily on new strikers this summer. The Stoke boss plans to bolster his strike-force and has been linked with West Ham's England international Carlton Cole and Birmingham City hit-man Cameron Jerome. But Greenhoff says he has been hugely impressed by the way Walters thrived in his first season in the top flight, following his £2.75m move from Ipswich last summer. Greenhoff netted 101 goals in 338 games for City, between 1969 and 1976, and is rated one of the most gifted forwards ever to play for the club. Walters, pictured below, has been lauded for his work-rate, but Greenhoff says there is far more to his game than that. He says the 27-year-old has become a crucial member of the side, not least for his ability to drop back into midfield before joining Kenwyne Jones as a second striker when Stoke are on the ball. Greenhoff said: "As a player I like him a hell of a lot. He understands the game. He works hard, but he isn't just running around like a headless chicken. "He also makes good runs within the box; he doesn't just stand around. When he is making those runs to the near post he is also making space for other players. "Jon Walters is proving invaluable to the team. If any striker signs thinking they will walk straight into the team, then I think Jon will have something to say about that." Walters finished the season joint top scorer with Jones on 12 goals, having become a regular in the side in the second half of the season. Greenhoff says Premier League football is bringing the best out of a player who was competing in League Two with Chester four years ago. He said: "Maybe he just needed more belief in himself, but I think after training with Premier League players, it has clicked with him all of a sudden. He believed he could handle this level and has taken that on to the pitch."
Sgt Walters was fantastic for us last season, I'm sure he can still improve too! Ture enough he works so hard and never gave up on anything. If Jimmy G say's he's good I ain't going to argue with one of Stoke's best ever signings/player. Absolute legend. Only pity, we had too sell him too of all clubs Man Utd. Great artile Sgt cheers...
Cheers Potts. I really like the article as well. Nice to see some recognition for Jonny from such a legend as Jimmy. My Dad often talks about Jimmy, and how he was the best volleyer he ever saw, and that he was the best English player never to play for England. I think Jonny will improve, great to see someone work their way through the divisions as a player, only 4 years ago he was playing in League 2. It shows what hard work and determination can do. When they're both on song the Jones and Walters partnership is a pleasure to watch, they work so well together, but I do hope we add a couple of quality strikers to the mix, just to keep Jonny and Kenwyne on their toes.
Your Dad was right Sgt, Jimmy WAS the best volleyer of the ball I have ever seen as well as being the best player never to have played for england alongside Peter Dobing I believe? Do you remember those old clips that somebody posted on 606 a year or so ago, stacks of gems from Jimmy - priceless! When Jimmy and Hudson were terrorising defences and what a combination that was - Jimmy said " easy - we play with us eyes " Ah well - have good day all
Yeah Nick I was there when Jimmy hit that vollery from over his right shoulder, Birmingham i think? Av it! They were all great player's. I know Harry Burrrows very well, remember him Nick. He could give a football a right gud smackin. I keep telling him, I remember seeing him play! Too be fair, he looks great but his knees are now well knackered. Not sure how he even manages to walk these days. And, best of all, he still has some of the older Stoke fans asking for his autograph. Still makes him wonder what all the fuss was about! Legends one and all mate. P.S. I never did get Jimmy Gs though. The only one's missing from the 72 final are Jimmy's and Easthams Enough, enough about yesterday's hero's, happy days.
Jimmy is so right about Jon Walters he has come in and been a revelation for us scoring some great individual goals v chelsea, v Bolton semi 2 of the best this year.He is flexible and hard working and after 85 mins when TP makes a sub Jon slips back into Midfield that says it all about him.Super Fit Super Jon. TP deserves great credit for this signing and for Jimmy Greenhoff to give this praise is extra special as he was one of the finest players i have ever seen a absolute Legend and such a pity that the club had to sell him. Finally it says it all that his success with us has now seen him get Internationl call ups
Certainly do remember Harry Burrows Potts, yup he sure gave it some GBH - if my memory serves me well (which it usually does not!!) Didn't he come from the Villa?? Has he got ANY hair left!! Hope you had a good night last Friday Night - if you can remember that is !!!!!
Nick Not sure but I will ask Harry next time I do see him mate. I think you may well be correct re Aston Villa. Yeah, he actually hit one ball so hard once, it burst. Hence the saying. " cos kick a bow agen a wow, and yed it til it bosses" He does have some hair left a bit like Sir Bobby Charlton's was in the sixtes! Kind of brush and polish job these days. And, he is the most bow legged player I've ever seen. Friday night erm, yep got almost totally bladdered mate. I remember getting to Manchester and making some kind of a thank you speech. More like making a right fool of myself. Actually mentioned Stoke City and it went down pretty well a bit like the numerous pints I got through. Great thing was, my mates were really impressed with the teams performance last season so, I guess Mr P isn't doing so badly as some might suggest. where's Nantwich, Cov Fox etc?? I was given a scale model of the Airbus 380 by my boss. Too which I replied. " This is awesome but, I would loved too have had the chance to work on it and even better, fly in it. He told me Pott's, leave it with me! All in all, a great night
