Bristol City FC have appointed Steve Cotterill as the club’s new manager. The 49-year-old has agreed a three-and-a-half year contract and takes the reins immediately, with his first game in charge being the FA Cup with Budweiser second round tie at Tamworth on Sunday (December 8th, 2pm). Cheltenham-born Cotterill was unveiled at a press conference this morning, before taking charge of training for the first time. City vice chairman Jon Lansdown told bcfc.co.uk: “I'm delighted that Steve has chosen to join Bristol City Football Club. “I believe he has the drive, energy and ability to get us back to winning ways. “He is passionate about bringing success to this club and I am looking forward to working with him to achieve that.” Cotterill began his managerial career with a two-year spell at Sligo Rovers in Ireland, whom he led into Europe. He moved to Cheltenham Town in 1997, then a non-league club. They were promoted from the Southern League Premier Division to the Football Conference in his first season. The success continued, lifting the FA Trophy a year later and steering the Robins to second place in the Conference – at a time when there were no play-offs. It mattered little as Cheltenham secured the Conference title in the following campaign to reach the Football League for the first time. Two successive top half finishes in League Two were to follow before Cotterill then took Cheltenham to the League Two play-off final, where they won 1-0 at the Millennium Stadium against Rushden & Diamonds. Cotterill remains a hero to fans of Cheltenham, who have never seen their side higher than the heady League One days of his reign. In the summer of 2002 he was rewarded for his Cheltenham exploits with a move to Stoke City before joining Sunderland soon after as assistant to Howard Wilkinson. In 2004 Burnley came calling for Cotterill and he maintained their Championship status, despite going through a period where the club’s best players were being sold. Cotterill spent the last few months of the 2009/10 season at Notts County, where he helped them claim the League Two title – his fourth promotion as a manager. He then helped steer Portsmouth through a period of financial difficulty, before taking over at Nottingham Forest 18 months later. Cotterill’s most recent job in football was coaching with Queens Park Rangers under Harry Redknapp’s management last term, but now he’s back at the helm of a club close to his roots.
I say we get behind him, regardless of what's gone on and if some fans want to write him off before we've kicked a ball then it's up to them I hope he proves everyone wrong.
SC (Cotterill, not Coppel) will bring a brand of football that will be useful in League 1. However, it will not keep our fans happy for long, and will contradict what they are doing in the academy where teams are being taught how to play the game properly. The end result of this is, I see Cotterill as a two season stop-gap to halt the slide and get us back up. Then when he is found out at a higher level I imagine he will be replaced by a different type of manager, one who can forge a footballing, to-feet type of team from the jewels coming out of our academy I am also open to surprises, so there is always a chance however slight that he could be the next Don Revie. I'm just not holding my breath

Yep I don't care about what happened in his past. Its the present that speaks the loudest. Slightly concerned with the length of the contract but if the club are serious they had to give him a long contract. Lets hope he's a success. That's the hammer Ciderred because under the last twat that's where we was going. **** sake let's remember a ball has not been kicked. I wanted Di Canio but I was prepared to look at others and to be fair if Harry Rednapp and Joe Jordan valued him and offered him a coaching job then he can't be too bad can he. But time will tell at least I'm looking for we to his after match interview's telling it how it is and not having to turn the radio up to listen to some tit drowning on about we kept our shape, and if we scored it might of been different.
The notes were good yeah but that's about all he was good at, at this club! Really hoping this works out!
Don't agree with that Shiny................he did win the interclub 90's rave dancing championship a few weeks back which he sprung on everyone at the end of a post match interview.
