HULL City owner Assem Allam could face an FA charge after saying fans who sing “City till I die” in protest against his plans to change the club’s name “can die as soon as they want”.

The Egyptian-born businessman, who took over the club in 2010, oversaw its rise to the Premier League last season but has infuriated supporters with his determination to rename it Hull Tigers.

He inflamed passions even further in an interview published just hours before the home fixture against Liverpool.

Referring to the song, he said: “I don’t mind ‘City till we die’.

“They can die as soon as they want, as long as they leave the club for the majority who just want to watch good football.”

He added: “How can they call themselves fans, these hooligans, this militant minority, when they disturb and distract the players while taking away the rights of others to watch the football, and of companies who have paid good money for advertising?”

The governing body has been made aware of the comments and is investigating.

A spokesman for the FA told the Yorkshire Post: “We are aware of Dr Allam’s comments and will be reviewing them on Monday.”

The campaign group City Till We Die was set up to bring together fans opposed to plans to change the name, which has stood since the club’s inception in 1904.

A spokesman for the group said last night: “We are really disappointed by his words.

“We don’t think they are doing anything to lower the temperature.

“We are as committed to supporting the team as positively as we always have been.

“If Steve Bruce (manager) thinks it’s causing a distraction, it’s not us who are making inflammatory comments like that and it’s certainly not helping.”

Fans responded mockingly at the match, singing “We’ll die when we want”.

I wonder if the FA will take the opportunity to hint to Mr Allam on if they're liable to view a name change application favourably or not?

I suspect they'd rather an application wasn't submitted and the issue is dropped. But then I would think that.

People who regard press articles as helpful or useful should be very wary.

All the media is a whore; all it wants is to sell stories. One minute it can be in your favour, the next it can be totally the opposite.

Just as I was disappointed by the comments Assem Allam chose to make in the media at the weekend, so I am now by yet another public escalation by the FA. Is say again, there will be no winners and losers out of all this, only losers.

Who said it's useful or helpful? I just thought it was informative, I'll leave others to make their own judgement calls.

When I read the article I wondered if the Prem or F.A. would intervene because his comments certainly crossed the line. Lets hope some good comes of this and helps to mend fences.

Who said they said you thought it was useful or helpful? I was making a generic statement in advance of the inevitable, "jingoistic" tripe that "we're winning and he's losing the War", being posted.

If AA sits back and looks at what has happened he might realise that he has got the exposure he was craving! People are discussing us more now then if we had just accepted hull tigers!

The FA in using some common sense shocker. Good. Some people are too sensitive and like to misunderstand everything he says, to moan about it.

That made me laugh, he's spot on. He's not telling them to die now, or wishing them dead, and he's turned the CTWD mantra on its head and mocked it. Poor little princesses not liking some "humour" thrown back at them.

On the bright side, at least he didn't refer to you lot as a cancer.

My wife had cancer and nearly died. She missed out on a season pass that season because she didn't think she would be around to use it. Try telling her it's humour. Assam Allam's words are extremely distasteful, he would never say those words to her face. I have never insulted anyone on an internet forum before, but you are an odious prick.

Way to miss the point. On these very forums it was suggested it's what Dr Allam is, he never used that description, our fans have, and I agree 100% with you, its odious. Along with all the other hate and bile directed at him.

He has called her a hooligan and militant, and compared her to Scargill, all because she sings City til I die, and then says she can die as soon as she wants. She thinks about her experience every waking minute, the comments were crass and despicable. You then suggest it was humour. Personal things like this should not be brought onto a football message board, but his and your comments overstepped the mark.

For goodness sake man, you make it sound as though he sent her a personal email.

Well he may as well have done. Do you think his words were humorous? How about people who have died following City? Do you think the parents of the young lad who died travelling to Barnsley think his words are humorous?

You have no idea how upset his wife was by the comments. I think a bit of common decency is called for.

We all know what he meant. He doesn't want our support and why don't we all just leave his club.

Unless you've talked to him you have no idea whether he meant we should all die as soon as possible, or not. Just because other people think it was an inappropriate thing to say does mean he didn't mean it.
